2. You find the secret rite scroll
3. You give the scroll to him
4. Exhaust his dialogue
5. He gives you a letter for Freya
6. You talk to her and give her the letter
7. Exhaust her dialogue
It might glitch if you don't talk to her before giving him the scroll didn't happen for me
rest at a site of grace or fast travel somewhere out of the castle and go back to where he was standing to see if it's there
if it doesn't appear just use an updated cheat engine to add the letter to your inventory and that should set the flags
1. Help Hornsent fight Leda. This should fully unlock Ansbach and Freya’s quest.
Or
2. If Ansbach disappears after giving him the scroll. Defeat Mesmer, go talk to Leda, go back to Ansbach’s location. Help him fight Leda, then get his letter for Freya.
I'll have to resort to Cheat engine. I went back to Ansbachs location on the first floor and nothing is left. This seems to be because of the convoluted chain of events with Leda, Hornsent, Ansbach, and Freyja in Shadowkeep.
Going by the wiki page I was supposed to have a duel between Hornsent and Leda in the main gate. Unfortunately I never saw the invasion summon signs as I passed it before reaching Messmer, Thus softlocking Hornsent to the boss fight which progresses Leda's quest to Ansbachs duel, but since Ansbach has left everything has gone out of form and the whole of Shadow Keeps now out of order.
Your second option has helped mostly. I have indeed been able to advance the quest after defeating Messmer, being able to duel Leda with Ansbach. But the letter still has not dropped where Ansbach once stood.
I’m on sixth play-through. So far the only way I can get his letter for Freya, is to talk to Freya first, go talk to Ansbach.
He will get stuck on the dialogue saying that him and Freya are two sides of the same coin. Even after giving him the scroll. From there I can either help Leda fight Hornsent, or vice versa.
If I help Hornsent, I can advance Ansbachs quest line, if I help Leda, I have to kill Mesmer, then help Ansbach, fight Leda, before he gives me the letter to Freya.
Also not sure if this part matters, but I always enter from the church district. Usually save the golden hippo until after Mesmer is dead.
The real purpose of most of these side quests is to recruit allies for the end game fights so you don't have to face Leda and the final boss alone. That's why those fights are hard. The devs figured that players would complete the side quests and show up with lots of help. Judging by people complaining about the final boss, it seems most are showing up alone after having tanked the side quests.
I saw a summon sign for one of the night sisters before the double tree sentinel fight but i ended up falling off the cliff there and when i tried to resummon the sign was gone. I also saw one in mesmer's room instead of hornsent.
Too many moving parts maybe?
