oh, and bleeds/rot... lots of that bs will do the trick.
I also used Mimic Tear just to try and get through phase 1 faster, though it actually did very little when I won.
aside, he's predictable after a while. you can see this clearly when using the above - because you don't need to focus current time so much to stay alive. i.e. its a good way to learn the fight also.
phase 2 mega aoe? just face towards him and block, rather than trying to run/dodge at impact. MUCH easier. the phase 2 light+sword attacks? blocking, poking (antspur rapier imbued with blood, no arcane invest in my case), and backpedal to the side, you'll avoid the light echoes of his attacks.
i used the haligtree greatshield, it has good holy mitigation. the fingerprint greatshield (tombstone one) is bestest, probably.
double-turtle talisman lets you get back end in gaps of pressure quickly, enough end to make that work plus wear heavier armor.
another way is the thorns spell, but that can go wrong fast on lightly equipped characters. main hand a staff, and wear a shield, use scholars shield.
night claws are effective against him with the WA throw, you can put bleed from range.
but by far, the poke and tank way just works.
I can't believe how effective the shield is. I haven't used blocking once my entire play through and now I feel like blocking is cheating, lol
Yeah bleeds make the DLC bearable for a melee run
Once I saw my damage jump to 3k with a bleed R1 it was over for any interest in a quality build, no way they can pull off thousands of bonus damage out their ass like that
And occult scaling without bleed is still very good.
2. DLC Golem Ashes should do well
3. Weapon with good stance dmg also can stagger mr.Rajh easily
4. Impenetrable Thorn!!!!
5. learn sword pattern, also just change dodge direction everytime when the big start floating around while hitting you with his clone
I had to poke and tank him. I don't think the boss is that bad in his phase 1, I just hate how his phase 2 forced me into making a new build, and the shield just tanks all damage making it easier than even soldier of Godrick. Have shields always been this good throughout the base game? It doesn't even feel fair
