Summoning makes the boss harder.
so either solo him or summon at most 1 co-op buddy (likely one of the NPC's for story/quest purposes) and you will make the fight a lot easier on yourself.

i was banging my head against the wall for 2-3 hours because i summoned both NPCs for the fight (i like lore/story) but when i switched it up and summoned only one of them (bleed boi) i beat the boss in 3 attempts.

its like night and day. boss becomes significantly harder if you summon 2 people, whether they are players or npcs, so if you are having trouble, don't summon.

on that note; i love how miyazaki deliberately made this boss easier when solo'd to one-up the "if you summon you didn't beat the game"-community, essentially forcing them to summon if they want to beat the boss at his absolute hardest.

i'll admit i'll be impressed if you can solo the boss while summoning 2 players and have them do nothing to help you, though.

Yup, this. If you're having trouble getting your summon out without a distraction, try the Opaline Bubbletear or an Uplifting Aromatic just before entering the gate. Dodge his first attack and immediately start summoning. At that point his next strike will either get blocked by your shield, or if you're lucky he'll start on a move with a big enough windup that you can finish summoning and still dodge it.
