How to beat Commander Gaius
Use Bloodhound Step, dodge around him, not away from him and do NOT SUMMON. Regardless of build. I just killed him with my full Int pure sorcerer with scadu upgrade 6 by having a dagger with BS step in right hand, and offhanding carian slicer in the other. Before, I beat him with bloodfiend arm with bloodhound step with much less fp build, this tactic is very universal. I dare to say it was kinda fun too. Bloodhound step fixes this fight entirely. Is this fight still broken? God yes, but we don't need to wait for FromSoft's fixes to have fun with it.

More specific tips:

Most important: DO NOT SUMMON. I cannot stress that enough, people from random queues are not ready for him, they will die long before they make up for health they added to him. Leave it between you and him and your summons (although splitting aggro doesn't help here that much, just summon something that will hurt him, he tends to dodge thin projectiles specifically well).

I-frames from BHS (bloodhound step) can consistantly dodge ALL of his attacks, but you need to dodge around him and hug his ass, especially during his melee combos, because if you dodge away he WILL clip you. Also I hope this goes without saying, never panic dodge

During his second phase do not ever stay in his lingering gravity balls, when he shoots one just give up the damage window and move away, trust me its worth it. Most of his moves don't get to much threatening in this phase as long as you hug him and time dodges right.

One move that you probably can outrun, but I strongly recommend you learn to time properly is his corkscrew leap. If you dodge this correctly, not only can you negate the annoying shockwave entirely, you also get the longest damage window of the entire fight. And here is how. You need to be close to him, but not under him. This range is quite large, important part is to not stand to far from him, or else he lands in front of you instead of on top of you and the shockwave will get you. You need to dodge slightly before he starts descending, or at the very moment he starts so sadly this means you just need to remember the timing, but practice a little and you'll get it every time.

Go and conquer fellow tarnished, you can do it!

Also if you beat this fight and have your own tips, share them here!

All you gotta do is lower his hp to 0.

Orphan of Kos was a malnourished albino fetus, yet it made its impression on the world none the less

if you run a shield, just slap Vow of the Indomitable on it, especially a light shield, 1 whole second of total invincibility is busted, and it costs basically nothing to cast. Using it when he's directly in front of you to avoid that broken charge hitbox is far safer than risking a roll imo. And if you don't normally use a shield, use it anyway, just keep it in your left hand and your main source of damage in the right. Don't be afraid to use your spirit summons, Putrid Corpse ashes in particular can survive quite a while and give you some much needed breathing room to heal or reposition away from his flying stomp with the expanding rings of gravity rocks that linger for barely too long to roll into any earlier than frame-perfect.
