My god, wth happened with FROM and bosses?
No spoilers for final boss please, but i kinda know that it is miserable just like all the other bosses in this DLC.

1 - AoEs all the time.
2 - RIDICULOUSLY hyper aggressive.
3 - Combos that never stop or that can be chained with other combos and normal attacks.
4 - 500% faster than the player.
5 - "Zanzibart forgive me" phase 2. Makes them even faster, more AoEs, unblockable attacks, more damage, more non-stop attacks.

I'm not lying when i say that i couldn't even SEE what Messmer was doing let alone locate him during the fight.
I can't wait to see what BS the final boss will have. :winter2019neutralbulb:

The old "doable with any build, but easier with certain builds" basically dies on the last boss.

Oh you were a spell caster? All spells are too slow.
Oh you were a colossal weapon dude? Good luck swinging at him.

Just down the line. Nothing about watching a boss do ♥♥♥♥ for 30 seconds to maybe get a single swing in or heal because he hit you is fun. There is no back and forth, reacting to what's happening. It's becomes a rhythm game where you memorize the pattern to dodge all the nonsense and hope you don't make a mistake.

Or you slap on a Greatshield, Golden Braid and Bleed Antspur and just poke your way to a win with a build you probably never played before this fight.

Sorry about your Sorcery build, but the solution to the puzzle was Greatshield and poking.

Edit: Also there is now a Vigor tax. 60 Vigor or you're not making it past half the nonsense here. It's not a build choice to be tanky. Everyone must be max tanky. Take one of your Talisman slots and accept it's going to be Greatshield Talisman.

Agree.
I'm surprised they didn't do a 4 tree sentinels / gargoyles boss fight or something equally ridiculous.

I'm genuinely confused on how people find Messmer "hard to read". He's probably one of the cleanest fights Fromsoft has ever made. Just watch his spear. He will create a bunch of fire in the air and then stab through it and spin. If he spins immediately its safe to attack, if he spins with a delay - he will have a follow up with scraping a spear against the ground and stabbing. Every single move he does is extremely clear and understandable how to avoid almost intuitively imo.
That said, the final boss does have major ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ issues with some of his moves, I can agree here.

yeah it's awful design but Elden Ring bosses in general are awful with this but its also a game that wants you to switch builds around use buffs and magic so yeah they are bad at designing bosses to be hard at this point make the fight interesting a load of AOE tracking hyper delayed moves is dumb Morgott is the best all around boss fight for a reason he doesn't one shot your ass and you can properly fight him.

Unfortunately it seems like FromSoft has just run out of ideas on how to make the souls-type games challenging. They have three tricks - make boss damage extreme to one shot the player, make boss teleport directly in front of the player to land a perfect attack, and combo the player to death.

They tested the waters a bit with Malenia and the DLC is basically "Waterfowl dance: the expansion". It used to be when you died to a FromSoft boss, you would think to yourself "that's my fault, I got greedy". When it comes to Elden Ring's DLC, it's more like "OK, now I have to learn through trial and error how to deal with this new BS attack".

yeah pretty much

From pushed this gameplay to it's limits and beyond. They need new gameplay for the player character if they want to keep going with these type of bosses. Especially when a ton of the slower spells/attacks are barely even usable in these fights which only ruins the rpg aspect.
I think Fromsoft forgot these are role playing games they're making. Or maybe they wanna toss aside the role playing part and focus on making some other kind(s) of games.

Imho Dark Souls 1 had the best bosses. They were part of the world and just another obstacle while you were adventuring.

Now they are just... bosses in a mmo circle/square arena.

If you found Messmer to be a unpleasant fight then I've got some pretty dire news about the last boss (After facing that boss you'll look back at the messmer fight VERY fondly, especially the rewards)

DLC final boss is atrocious. I tried him a few times on the week of release until I just stopped taking it seriously. I intended to wait til he was nerfed to beat him but I was sick of trying to avoid spoilers so I very luckily managed to summon someone who blue spelled their shield and distracted him while I just spammed Collapsing Stars. Was very easy in the end. But again, mostly luck on my part wrt who I summoned.

Mainly I think the 2nd phase is the problem because he is almost always going to be doing at least chip damage to you with the extra light beams. Combine this with his regular hits 1 or 2 shotting you and it's very easy to die.
Also the constant relentless attacking gives you almost no window to heal or attack back so the fight boils down to roll roll roll roll roll, make 1 attack, roll roll roll roll roll, get hit, roll roll roll roll roll, heal, roll roll roll roll roll, etc It's a very long drawn out fight where you have to chip him down slowly and he can just suddenly kill you at any time if you're unlucky.
It's one of the worst fromsoft bosses, I think.

You don't want spoilers for the final DLC boss but you already have described it in the first post perfectly.

I beat all the bosses except the last boss. You think its bad, wait until you face the last boss. Its ridiculously stupid. The game is enjoyable up until the end... you know you want to finish strong... NOPE you feel like everything you have done is a waste of time.

The second wave of the BOSS is nothing but a light show, getting pummeled while it just swings on giving you no time to heal, no time to defend... Its just roll, roll dodge, dodge... roll roll... Get hit several times because you cant block... roll roll... die...

I have seen videos, people cheat this boss or ridiculous shield with poke stick... or some big chicken leg with blood... I want to be my character... I want to choose weapons and go in fighting and know i have a damn chance. Not this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

100%

I was nodding along your post, until you mentioned Messmer. Don't insult my boi like that. He's special, and perfect.

You literally dodge him the exact same way in phase 2 as phase 1, except for 2 moves where you need one additional dodge. He really isn't that bad, you just need to learn how to dodge the combos and take your time. People cried and moaned about Malenia too until it became common knowledge on how to dodge waterfowl.

this is the only right answer

bunch of clowns, this game is not for you

I beat Radahn in the lore accurate Hidetaka 'Poison Swamp' Miyazaki intended way, a crazy rolling spark frenzy three hit kill. It was fun cause I've never used the mechanics like that so I really experienced Elden Ring playing with a sword and dodging the first 99% and the last percent I experienced the true Elden Ring mastery, saying ♥♥♥♥ that ♥♥♥♥ and building a monster to fight a monster.

This is the way,

For me it was scarlet aeonia and bloodflies with a fingerprint shield to protect me from his endless waves of BS
