Do NOT approach the Shadow Keep!
This is some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game design. Whoever is responsible for this needs to be fired.

So it turns out a BUNCH of stuff in the game is permanently locked out if you approach the entrance of the Shadow Keep. LOTs of NPC quests are automatically failed if you haven't already finished them. You also lose out on the ability to summon Leda for the Rellana fight. Probably other stuff I don't know about.

You don't have to kill anyone, talk to anyone, or do ANYTHING more than just walk near the entrance of the Shadow Keep for this to happen.

This really makes me mad. There is NOTHING in the game to suggest you will be screwed out of a bunch of content just for going exploring. You don't even have to kill any bosses to get there.

This makes me want to just quit the DLC. Phenomenally stupid game design.

this game isnt a walk in the park like the witcher 3.

It's so funny when wiki metaslaves come out of the woodworks to boast

From what I've read, approaching Shadow Keep does not in fact lock you out from any quests, it merely causes some NPCs to move.

DLC was much more enjoyable to me on the second playthrough after I injected all wiki-knowledge into my brain (first playthrough was blind). FromSoft quest systems are horrible. I completely missed several "quests" in the base game on my blind playthrough as well, including patches, dallios, and rya (those are just the ones that happened to completely break, I also had to wiki how to complete nepheli, millicent, and probably others too).

Nothing in the OP is true. Just look at the wiki. I'm not going to waste my time explaining it.

what about killing Messmer
No, you need to actually go and trigger the world-changing event yourself after that.

Research is exactly what you are not supposed to have to do to play a video game. I love the challenge of these games, I hate the questlines that can unknowingly wreck your whole playthrough.

Your playthrough isn't "wrecked" - needing to 100% everything your first time round isn't the way this game is designed. None of their games are.

Just do something different on your next play through. You know what you're getting into when you purchase these games in this regard.

Shouldn't either, there was something about burning a tree, but I've not progressed that far yet.

NPC quests are not worth doing in the first play thru.
as much as i love the DLC, this is the most annoying part of the DLC to me as well, at least they could have put the event trigger after beating the golden hippo or something.

but oh well, at least it didn't completely ruin NPCs quest line and i got my equipments

Nah dude this is a very dumb take. Having to look up stuff on wikipedia or whatever does not equate to difficulty, it equates to immersion breaking, tedium, and bad game design. I love an in depth game like many people, but you can't deny that being locked out of content because you explored in an game with a focus on exploration isn't silly.

Ill gladly look up a information on a weapon, talisman, or whatever if I haven't found it after hours, but this is much different than that.

Doubt they are talking about wikipedia. You need to listen to all dialogue, read all items description and take notes and you should not have much of a problem. Welcome to 80's gaming. The nostalgia is why I am here.
Guy is complaining about a staple fromsoft model like he stumbled upon it for the first time in his life. What?

Honestly at this point creating complex time sensitive NPC quest lines the player is likely to fail if they don't follow a walkthrough is like tradition for Fromsoft. I think having you simply ride near Shadow Keep to fail most of them if you have not progressed them enough is just their best work yet.

It doesn't. You have to burn something to do that.

Huh? Actually people researching game walk through and spoilers is not something I'd use to argue against hand holding as it's exactly that. Its quite easy to understand people being upset with some of this as usually it's a matter of killing that prompts consequence, not exploration. The game encourages exploration and it has negative consequences not alluded to by anything. This has nothing to do with hand holding lol.
