As simple as possible, Poise is your ability to resist staggering. Stagger, in Elden Ring's context, is the side-effect of damage that causes you to flinch and interrupt whatever action you were doing. So every time you're knocked out of drinking a flask or have your spell cast interrupted, that's happening because the damage you just took did enough damage to make your character flinch.

It may help to think of it as a hidden status bar, like for Bleed, that fills a little whenever you take damage from any source but decays extremely quickly when you're not taking damage. The flinch or knock-down being the triggered negative effect.

Poise in this game works on hard breakpoints. 51 is sufficient to resist being staggered from most normal attacks in the game. 50 or less is effectively the same as having 0 poise and means most attacks have a fair chance of staggering you. In order to basically never be flinched at all, you need more than 100 poise, which is only possible by wearing some of the heaviest armor in the game and having the Bull-Goat talisman (which further boosts poise) equipped.

Depends on what type of attack you are doing. IMO poise is too complicated to worry about,
So i just dress for looks.

I'd look up how poise works, its weird. For example, if I remember (what I heard a while ago) correctly, poise values between 51 and 100 don't really matter, you need to hit 101 for it to be good. It probably has to do with the weapon/attack as well, my poise is like 70 and my Grafted Greatsword is trading hits with most things just fine.

Depend more on what weapon you are using rather than the armor on you, 51 poise is still good in pve though.
