From the moment I read that item description I always assumed that was a preemptive justification for why everybody in the land of reeds will try to kill you the same way they do in the lands between. The samurai class is also vaguely linked to the Blood Star, which is a really cool entity that's almost nonexistent in the base game, so that would have been a perfect place to learn more about it
