Messmer Disappeared Glitch? (SPOILERS)

I tried doing my diligence on if there were any other posts on this and nothing I saw seems to be the same as my situation.

I fought Rellana and the hippo making my way through Castle Ensis and the area after. Got to Messmer and fought him quite a few times and gave up to go grab more tree fragments to power up and to level up some more. I went and fought the Dancing Lion and killed it. I thought ok I'm going to go try Messmer again. I fast traveled back to the site just outside his fog door; his door was gone and there was a new site of grace in his boss room that I hadn't "discovered" yet. I discovered it and rested there.

I did NOT receive the remembrance or Messmer's kindling to burn the stuff past the Dancing Lion.

Did I do something in the order of my playthrough to mess this up? I have seen a YouTube video on how to get into the area after the lion the "back way" but I am kind of salty because I wanted to actually kill Messmer myself. Anyone else have this happen?

Maybe I was in your group, because I saw it happen 10 minutes ago.. Or maybe it happened to more people.

I did this on my own - happened this weekend to me Saturday night :/
