I presume you're trying to parry?

You have to get the parry to happen just as the cane touches you. There's a slight delay though, so you have to hit early, around when he pulls back to hit. Fiddle with different timings, and eventually it will click. It's pretty precise though, so it's difficult to get. Then after parrying, beat the crap out of them!
