DLC lore backlash vs Mass Effect 3 ending backlash. Similar or different?
i got off to the wrong foot with ER because i was disappointed it wasn't DS3 again and i assumed (wrongly, i guess) that RR Martin wrote the ingame info dumps. i have never been that attached to the lore even after i gave it a chance and learned it was actually pretty good and much more interesting if you follow the npc quests

i did care very much about ME3 and the ending kicked me square in the crotch. never played Bioware again. (although Bioware writing is mostly juvenile, tbh)

if you were disappointed in the DLC reveals, and you remember the way the ME3 ending landed like a turd, is disappointment with the DLC lore similar or different?

So, lot of false assumptions in this post that I'll get to, but to begin with, the ending for ME3 was fixed in the extended cut dlc that was completely free (it's included in the legendary edition, btw). Even before it, the ending felt bad but there wasn't really a way to make everyone happy with it anyway, too many player choices to account for.

With extended cut and 3100 war assets going full paragon, the ending for ME3 is incredibly good, actually. It's a lot different from the one you got when you intially played.

For Elden Ring, most of the lore feels great, actually. It's simply the ending and the final boss that comes out as a big disappointment. The fight itself is trash but the lore behind it wasn't exactly what players wanted.

Honestly all of the other lore tidbits in the DLC are more than worth the playthrough though, and i'm sure lore videos will surface explaining the bad bits in a way that will make us feel better at some point.

difference being the mass effect thing wasn't a lore issue, it was your choices not functionally mattering issue, in a game where your choices were supposed to matter.

different issues.

yeah, i didn't fully explain. the idea with ME3 was that the three options didn't fit with the story you personally experienced so no matter which color ending you went with, it felt wrong. this was my experience, and i was actually pretty upset about it

someone commented recently that Miquella's lore felt wrong for their attachment to the character. that's what i was getting at

Strange why are you comparing a narrative heavy RPG with dialogue choices vs a very mechanical heavy game with lore that you need hours of videos of to understand

This isn't even in the same realm as the cluster F that was ME3. Entirely re-written by 1 guy and culminated the ruin of a story driven trilogy. Elden Ring may have world building and contain lore, a compelling narrative is not the same reason why people play Elden Ring or any Dark Souls game from FromSoftware.

What controversy is even happening with the ER DLC? Why does anyone care?

some people have been commenting that it screwed up beloved characters. in both cases, the story is the thing told by the writers, not the thing imagined by the player

i can't relate to disappointment with ER because i assumed Miquella was a villain anyway and i'm less invested (haven't seen it yet, but i think i get the gist)

Casey Hudson though... oo boy. I guess we shouldn't rant about him in another games thread, but i hated him with the fire of a thousand suns, lol

What lore backlash? There isn't one.

We have a bunch of salty Chinese review bombing the DLC because of EAC... even though it's exactly the same anticheat the base game used.

Then we have a bunch of salty tourists whining about the bosses being too hard. To whom I say welcome to true Soulslikes.

some people didn't like the lore of the base game either (or terribly misunderstood it)

that isn't backlash, its not the same as going against the grain of what they have done for 3 games like mass effect did.

one is a failure of design, one is just subjective opinion.

People who don't use Vaati as their direct source thinking everything he says is 100% canon for lore and actually explores the lore themselves through the game are mad about the DLC. Everything in the base game pointed to Godwyn being Miquella's motivation for his plans.

Speaking of elden ring specifically the DLC is still new give it post 1 or 2 weeks post launch to see how its revieced after people get past initial reactions and have time to think it over.
