How do you progress Ymir's questline?

I'm not asking this as somebody that can't figure out how to do it, I'm asking this as somebody that has already finished it and fundamentally don't understand how I did it. He tells me to ring the bells at the two finger ruins so I go and do that, then he gives me the map to the third finger ruin which appears to be right in front of the chapel. He mentions something about tonight being an important night, so I assume something is supposed to happen overnight, I wait till night, nothing happens, I wait till morning, nothing happens, so I start looking around for a cave to get underground and find it there, nothing leads under the chapel.
So I go do something else and check up every once in a while, and every time Ymir is still sitting on his throne and nothing has happened, but then I go back one more time and he is no longer sitting on his throne, I check the throne and press a button that leads to a secret passage underneath the chapel. I must have either did something important or passed enough time for something to happen, but as far as I can tell there is no discernible reason why he left the throne

It's just an area reload. If you go away for a bit and come back almost immediately, he's gone. Combination of not being in the area anymore and sitting at the grace enough. I didn't have to do anything special other than teleport away, sit at a grace, then teleport back. He was gone.

There's boss at the end of that tunnel. It's all about those fingers areas ;) You can also get nice sword from his attendant.

That is so strange. If that's all I had to do then I have no idea why it didn't trigger earlier, maybe it was something about the way I did it, because I teleported back and forth a few times. Maybe it got bugged for a little bit, I've heard about some strange stuff happening in this game lately so SOTE might have made things a little screwy
