Does Incantations suck?

I just started a prophet character to make a paladin build and even farmed some runes and spells before going into Margit just to see how much damage I can make. I'm level 37 now and have 27 faith but with lightning spear I'm just doing 200 damage to Margit. Does Incantations suck that much? I remember my first sorcerer character doing more than 200 damage with glinstone pebble at level 6.

Make sure you are levelling up your incant seal as well. Spell damage in the early game is typically on the lower end compared to melee, but it is worth the struggle for what you'll achieve in the end game.
Incantations are probably the best magic type due to the sheer versatility of incants you'll unlock later on. For now, I would stick with your starting Catch Flame. Its fast, strong, and a fair amount of enemies are weak to fire. The Fireball the prophet guy in Roundtable sells is also good for early game.

Margit has good lightning resistance. Try getting the fire incantations from Corwyn at Roundtable Hold and you might do better. Also getting Sacred Blade Ash of War gives you a good weapon art. A lot of the good offensive incantations come later on. You just gotta have faith

Incants also have the best buffs of any class IMO. Look for those.

Incantations are generally better at buffing and healing. That's not to say that there aren't good damage incants, just a lot of them are found later in the game. Lightning spear is good but more PvP-focused than PvE. Like other people have said, the basic fireball from Corhyn is pretty good early on. Also remember that both the fireball and lightning spear can be charged.

In particular the basic Black Flame incantation which you can find in Stormveil Castle is a very solid attack incantation. It's like the regular one but with added damage that is percentage based.

No. You can literally beat the game with the most basic incantations. Pest threads and blackflame fireball (if you have the stats for it).

Keep playing more and try to find a better test "subject" than Margaret i mean.....Margit.

Pest Threads isn't exactly easy for a new player to figure out how to get.

Faith starts off weak, mainly due to lack of OP Meteor Staff equivalent.
It won't feel good until you get some of the "Good Stuff" like:

-Black Flame: It does a little less DMG then Flame Sling but has Black Flame %Hp melting. Works on everything except snakes.
-Dragon Claw: this is by Far the hardest hitting Spell you can use early, and you can use it twice in a row.
-Rotten Breath: Nice Hp you have there, it would be a shame if it starting MELTING (insert evil laugh)
-Discus of Light: it's like Glintstone Pebble but cheaper & it comes back for more DMG.
-Heal: Against those vomiting many hand guys, this is a Nuke... Seriously, it just works.
-Giant Flame Take Thee: Big Fire goes Boom
-Catch Flame: WE have Carian Slicer at home... But better!
-Bestial Sling: PVP'ers Incantion of choice
-Stone of Gurranq: PVE'er Incation of Choice

That is not even getting to how good Faith Weapons are.

i just did a pure faith run with pretty much only seals and it kinda pays off late game

godslayer seal with the black ball was my bread and butter for 80% of the game and before that it kinda sucks, try grabbing the cipher pata, it helps and you can get it at the round table as early as you want

No not at all. Incantions are amazing though you need to build for the type of damage you want to deal meaning you have to use specific talismans and cerulean tears that boost for example lighting damage and also use other buffs like golden vow, howl of shabriri ect.

It is also important which sacred seal you use, to upgrade it as much as possible and oc to get the attributes said seal scales best with as high as possible.

I started as confessor for "paladin" build and it worked out rally well for 150/160 etc stat wise
