Lore's actually pretty deep when you get into it. You should totally look it up.
Clearly I was into the lore but these little dismissive sentences were like nails on a chalkboard. You've been a good sport though and kinda funny so I'm not interested in fighting.
For context:
-Deathroot item flavor text:
"A source that gives rise to Those Who Live in Death.
The beast clergyman, found at Bestial Sanctum in the distant east, collects and devours these roots.
On the night of the dire plot the stolen Rune of Death enabled the first Death of a demigod. Later, the Rune of Death spread across the Lands Between through the underground roots of the Greattree, sprouting in the form of Deathroot."
-Cursemark of Death key item flavor text:
"Cursemark carved into the discarded flesh of Ranni the Witch. Also known as the half-wheel wound of the centipede.
This cursemark was carved at the moment of Death of the first demigod, and should have taken the shape of a circle.
However, two demigods perished at the same time, breaking the cursemark into two half-wheels.
Ranni was the first of the demigods whose flesh perished, while the Prince of Death perished in soul alone."
-Rogier dialogue script:
"The misshapen corpse under Stormveil? That is a sacred relic. Of the black knives plot. As that famed night of assassination is known.
It happened during the Golden Age of the Erdtree, long before the shattering of the Elden Ring. Someone stole a fragment of the Rune of Death from Maliketh, the Black Blade. And on a bitter night, murdered Godwyn the Golden.
That was the first recorded Death of a demigod in all history. And it became the catalyst. Soon, the Elden Ring was smashed, and thus sprang forth the war known as the Shattering.
I once wished to become a scholar, you see. I've spent many an hour scouring the archives for knowledge of that fateful plot.
The world has grown crooked, and if you intend to put it to rights, you'd better understand what happened to make it this way, mm?
And...that thing is to blame for the shape I'm in now... I urge the utmost caution. Don't disturb the corpse more than necessary..."

He literally tells you its related to Godwyn. Then, when you find Godwyn's corpse, at the roots of the great tree, it has the exact same face as this one. Godwyn's body surviving without a soul warped it to these proportions as the first of Those Who Live in Death
You still can see its blonde long hair on a side of his "head", and the clothes covering his legs.
He is just corrupted and corrupting everything else, because his soul died but his body somewhat did not, instead Ranny body died but her soul not. Thats why the centipede mark is split on 2, half for both of them.
This is Godwyn, both in Stormveil and in Deeproot Depths. And no, Fia doesn't want to make Godwyn God of Death. He is Prince of Death already.
People should pay more attention to lore, although I get that for simple minds the lore in Elden Ring, which is convoluted a bit, may be too much to imagine and digest
If you find the places with the deathroot, look carefully. You can sometimes see eyes on the growths. Sometimes a crab appears to have a similar face. Underground, in deep places, something related to death is corrupting from below (the Erdtree, or all the lands between). This is likely the leftover body of Godwyn, who was the first of "those who live in death", and the undead worship him as the Prince of Death (not The Golden).
So yes, Zombie Demi-God Godwyn is the most likely person. Even though you see what may be him later looking very different, and both very different from the intro video. But he's corrupting the roots all over the map, he's spread out, he's not just one small body in a specific location. And as a demi-god the appearance is not fixed (just witness the other demi-gods to see this).
But Godwyn is still dead, soul-less, this is all his left over body twitching, and spreading the "life within death" corruption far and wide.
Every eye on an infected crab is Godwyn. Every time you see deathroots along the walls in a catacomb, it's Godwyn. He has spread through the land using the existing roots of the Erdtree. The squid looking thing under Stromveil, with Godwyn eyes, is Godwyn.
He tried to find the source of the living dead rather than just keep fighting them like D. He traced it to deathroot and the Squid under Stormviel, with Fia's help.
