You could play one of the legacy games for a couple of bucks, and see by yourself if you like the genre.

Elden Ring is just a very modern Dark Souls

Watch more videos and decide for yourself if this is something you´d enjoy but don´t just watch those impressive no hit bossfights of super pros, instead watch uncut gameplay footage of your average player to get an idea of how this game really is.

Elden Ring is a good entry point because it is more open (allowing you to skip hard enemies and come back later) and gives you a lot of options to make things more or less difficult for yourself. If you have watched actual gameplay, you should already have a good idea about what the game is.

If you have played and liked other open world games, like Skyrim or others, I would say give it a try.
It's certainly harder, but you can either get overleveled, or use certain builds to make the game easier.

Depends on your preference. If you like open world games, without a Ubisoft style leash. You’re going to like, Elden Ring.

I would recommend to look into the first 1-3 hours of a blind let's play perhaps to see what actually happens (you won't spoil yourself much as it is a huge game), and not choose a streamer who thinks that you must beat the first big boss naked "because it's there", i.e. avoid the "it's so hard" hype videos... Knowledge is half the battle in these games.

Elden Ring isn't Dark Souls 4, though...

As I far as I have seen in gameplay videos, DS players come with many preconceived notions that hurt their enjoyment of Elden Ring.

Just go for elden ring if this is your first souls game, compared to other tittles elden ring is more casual friendly, the open world give much more freedom to tackle the challenges, and there is a lot of thing at your disposal in-game to unlock "easy mode" (Spells/Summons/Co-op/Weapon skills).

If there is one thing that will be difficult for new players is the learning curve, you may figured out the leveling or combat system yourself or do a little bit of research, but it is nothing complex and can be grasp easily.

ER was my first too. Just go with it, no reason or need to play any other Souls game first.

Well, then if you are fine with the monetary investment, try it out :) If you have any questions, ask here.
