Quick question, how do bloodstains work? Do they stay permanently?

As the title goes, this had me scratching my head recently. I was thinking of three possible outcomes:

a. It's a bound data that stays with your character permanently and they appear from time to time similar to how messages work.

b. It's still a data bound to your character but it's not permanent and they only appear on where you most recently died and left your runes. In this scenario they may also disappear after you collect those runes from the ground.

c. It's a temporary data that only holds place on the servers for just the next couple minutes/hours of your death.

If it's anything other than "a" I don't see the point on including them in the group password benefits... I think bloodstains are such a fun feature that we should easily be able to track our friends' journey with by setting up a group password.
I get why it would be a temporary thing if so, flooding the servers and all, but still.

So, anyone has any actual knowledge on that?

Some (A very few) are IG even if you play offline but they are very rare and usualy are just a hint for something else. The other blood stains are people playing in that area at that time. As I know the blood stains are Real Time.

I may be wrong, but is how I think they work since I started looking at it on DS2

There is only 1 offline bloodstain I can think of

It stays until the player who dropped it re-acquires their runes, or they die again (without a sacrificial twig equipped).
