The reason this game sold gangbusters was because Fromsoft actually invested in good marketing this time, even going as far as to make animated, TELEVISED trailers showing the events mentioned in the game's intro to promote the game. Combine that with actual goodwill from years of good games, normies finally seeing a chance to jump on the bandwagon, and actual traditional marketing meant for said normies, the game sold well.
