Holy damage incredebliy weak?
Is holy damage incredibly weak? I'm trying a Paladin for the first time after playing with a pure Mage and a Strength-only build. Both worked well, but now I'm going holy, and it's horrible. I've imbued my sword with holy ash of war to make it scale with faith. The damage is split evenly between physical and holy, but in practice, it feels like it's only half as effective.

Even enemies at Gatefront Ruins still require 4 to 5 strikes from me, even at level 50. That is ridiculous.

Yes, that is what I would call a paladin too. I don´t know the Souls Series.
Weapon: sword, mace or hammer (perhaps an axe)

Considering the Mix stats, Unique Weapons are going to give you the best Bang per Buck over Infusions that lack the Cold/Blood/Poison for Faith builds.

Ordovis's Greatsword would be the best fit, it scales well whit STR-Faith, and it's AoW deals mostly Physical to Holy (70-30)

Gargoyle's Blackblade is the earliest weapon you can grab, but the Boss Holding it is a Endgame Boss, although you can get it whit out cheating or Tweeking solo or whit the help of Jolly-Cooperation. It does not scale well, but it's base DMG is high and it's AoW does %DMG while slapping

Godslayer's Greatsword, another weapon that can be grabbed early by fighting a End game Boss. This is a Colossal Sword, that is slightly faster then the other Colossal Swords whit a AoW that does Black Fire for %HP DMG.

Blasphemous Blade fits you Stat theme, whit a AoW that is just Disgustingly op whit having Heals on Hit & Heals on Kill Passive. But it's look and name goes against your theme.

Staff of the Avatar Pure DPS King of the STR-Faith route, unloved because it deal a lot of Holy DMG & Butt Slams AoW

Miquellan Knight's Sword This is THE Paladin Sword... Located in a Hidden Dungeon beyond the Hidden Area at the very end of the Game... Sorry.

I´m not sure how to use this information.
I´m struggling at the start of the game as it looks like I can´t get a paladin build working.
This "endgame" stuff surely is nice but how does it help me to get a paladin running?

Or is a paladin just a nice respec option once you´ve beaten the game with a different build?
I´d like to play a naturally growing build while playing the game, if you know what I mean.

The option I gave you, Golden Halberd, you get from the Tree Sentinel riight at the start and it is strong af in terms of dmg/hit, have good range for a melee weapon and can stagger enemies also have a high crit dmg too.

To be honest, I´m struggling to beat the tree sentinel.

your weapon is not very upgraded.

How i have played faith builds....
Pure faith .... if you are up for it.

Get the claws that require just faith ...
From Roundtable hold. ...

I run to graveyards grab the , rune orbs , start with a lands between rune ...
level to 25 very fast while fighting nothing ....

THen use the claws until the capital where i grab the coded sword....
They cannot be blocked by shields.... scale off faith ... have no weight ....
but.... not a first timer route...

Ah, I overshot your problem. I'll give you the gist of what is going on.

The issue you are currently encountering is the split scaling Blues.

All enemies, players & you, have what is called hard defence. As in damage is reduce by a set amount. This hard defence happens to every individual affinity, so spells that do low DMG and weapons that do more then one Affinity get their damage reduce by more then expected.

This is a issue felt the hardest at the start. HOWEVER, this quickly goes away by leveling the relevant stats & getting better upgrades.

If you have not explored much beyond Limgrave or Defeated Margot (who is much much harder then most of the Bosses in the game) You won't have unlock The Roundtable Hold to get the upgrades above +3 or Buy a Mace. If you travel North or West, you will unlock the Hold after resting at a site of Grace.

If you go South, following the Road, you will find a Large Broken Down Wagon that holds a Morning Star. The Southern Peninsula is the Next Tier in Difficulty beyond Limgrave. Whit the Castle Fallowing suit, then Liurna & Caelid.

The Mace & Morning Star have slightly lower scaling then a Sword, but the base DMG is higher, making them easier to "Get Through the Split scaling Blues".

I´m no talking about bosses.

Even the weakes enemies from the start of the game seem to be 100% immune.
My stats are: Str 16, Dex 12, Fth 37
With the ash set to normal the sword is 121+16 physical.
With the ash set to holy the sword is 88+2 physical and 88+20 holy.

I do less damage when useing the holy version.
Wait until you have the ability to upgrade to +6 easily to test the practical differences between the two; also don't expect one or two enemy types to be representative of every enemy for the rest of the game when there are hundreds upon hundreds of uniquely-tuned areas

there must be something wrong with your build.
I'm also running melee FTH build rn, my stats distribution is similar to yours, and it hit like truck.

I dual wield Lordsworn Straight Sword both imbued with Sacred Blade (Sacred affinity), with Sacred Scorpion Charm and Two Fingers Heirloom talisman (all can be obtained easily), this set up carry me all the way to Leyndell, until I replace the right hand with the Lightsaber (Coded Sword).

Sometimes I need to swap to Flame Art though, some enemies like Radahn have really high holy damage resistance.

I switched to a claymore and upgraded it. Now the build starts to work.
I hope this will carry me till on long enougth.
Thank for all the help.
Unfortunately yes, holy is the weakest damage type in the game with a overwhelming amount of NPC’s resisting it. It’s main and possibly only use is against spooky skeletons and deathrite birds.
