I used pure strength my first go with the Lance Sword, but I focused on stance-breaking; you can get away with similar results with any big strength weapon really. That said, I find that he punishes you heavily for chugging more than pretty much any boss; if there's an opening, either take a sip or attack, you can't do both in this fight consistently.

I thought I was gud after defeating Malenia in 3 or 4 tries, Messmer took way more... made me reconsider.

I loved all the dlc bosses, and my enjoyment only heightens as I tackle the dlc with my alt characters.
