Shadow of the Erdtree makes my FPS drop
Hi. I've been playing Elden Ring a lot lately, especially to prepare my character for this new DLC. This is like my 4th run and I can tell 100% sure that since I bought this expansion my gaming laptop starts lowering my FPS to 40 whenever I come across a waterfall, rain or there's a scene with many VFX.
My laptop is a MSI Katana 17 B12V:
- CPU i7-12650H
- RAM 16GB DDR5 at 4800 MHz
- GPU RTX 4070
Again, I'm totally sure this is the first time I'm expiriencing this issue. I've always played at maximum settings without any problems

I haven't tried this myself yet as I am at work, but I am having the same issue. I read in another thread that disabling the NVIDIA in-game overlay fixed this for them. I'm going to try that when I get home.

Have you updated your drivers? They released an update that specifies ER DLC support which might smooth things out a bit.

That said, there's definitely some optimization that could still be done here, such as loading in less of the world while in dungeons etc, I've been getting framedrops in some unusual places where you'd expect it to be higher due to not needing to render large distances.

Some people are also saying that EAC could be the problem, which does make sense while the player count is high seeing as that's another separate server to connect to. I haven't tried disabling it to compare yet myself.

I hadn't, actually. I've gotten into the habit of only upgrading my drivers when I have problems, since the last time I did so it CAUSED problems. But since this one does have notes that they did stuff for the expansion, I've installed it and I'll see how it goes tonight.

be warned that when using my AMD drivers to preform better I am getting failure to login. I suspect that the games FPS is linked to anticheat. Which the driver software ticks. But I am not sure. Every other day I have to uninstall and reinstall anticheat. I'm getting 30 or less FPS and I want 50 at least so I can have a smooth experience but its smearing and dropping frame like crazy.

for context:
CPU: ryzen 5 2600 3.4GHz 6 core 12 thread
RAM: 32 GB
GPU: RX 6700 XFX Swift

my GPU is equivalent to a 3070

My drivers are already up to date and I also tried to lower the quality of the game but nothing. instead it's like it keeps getting worse

I've turned it off but nothing has changed

Disable E-cores in bios if you can, i'm not sure if it's possible on a laptop.

I actually had better luck after DOWNGRADING my drivers to one from december 2023, we really need a general performance update I think

Download an older Graphics driver, The game has issues with new versions. You may need to try a few before you find one that works. December 12th driver worked for me, Solid 60FPS every inch of the map now. Also When installing the drive do a Clean install. Hope this helps!

Can you tell me which version of driver you reinstalled?

Today I disabled Easy anti cheat and I'm playing at 60 fps.

I'm pretty sure it's caching shaders in the background for the new areas. Once you've played for a while in each new area it gets better.

My game was nearly freezing and dropping as low as 30s when I had stable 60 before the update. It's still struggling a bit but it didn't do the near freezes last night and seems to be improving over time.

This has been an issue since release, certain effects and areas cause FPS drops. Now that the DLC is out, it probably makes you more aware and think the DLC is the cause.
