Lore question: What is the Land of Shadow?

Apologies if it's an obvious answer, but I was just curious what the new area actually is. Is it a pocket dimension, an alternative universe, the afterlife? Or is Fromsoft ambiguous about its nature?

lots of early items you can find do suggest this seems like a precursor of what the lands between
- Death was drifting(?) <--Gravebird armor, I assume was the concept of death has been strayed off from the normal meaning,
- People getting some ailments and metamorphoses into insects,
- Crucible's influence so big that everything grows horn.
- it was suggested that "proper burial" prevents such metamorphosis (ailing talisman), and the proper burial was a key aspect in the golden order.

my current theory is that Marika came from this land, sees what it has become --> ?? -> makes the lands between and removed death which has already corrupted? and establish the erdtree burial

I haven't finished the DLC yet but it definitely feels like some kind of alternate universe. Almost like the Erd is the Yin and the Scad is the Yang, the two realms balance each other out perhaps? The skies have an odd draping effect that gives off the impression the land has been hidden under the surface of something, it's very cool
