Same, took a dozen tries at least to learn his moves, surprisingly I performed better solo than with summons or spirits, it's hard to predict when he isn't aiming at me.
I'm just so glad I didn't start the DLC with my ng+7 character, no idea how I'd beat him in that state

Not surprising. Balance has never been a consideration for these games. Just stand at range and blow up the bosses with two or three spell casts like the base game builds shows.

The real challenge in soulsborne games is going melee with no shield and not overleveling the game, no summons, etc.

If I wanted to finish it in a day I'd use the mimic, a shield, a bleed weapon and probably finish it within a day or two.

It's got to be said that the game isn't perfect. Some builds it feels like the game is impossible and on others it feels trivial.
