We need to talk about Rellana
I mean.. seriously? RELLANA? Did translator decided to be a king of dumb puns, or is it like this in japanese? The only thing dumber I can imagine is naming some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Moonrithyll.
By the way, the guy who placed "bush dog" and invisimage ambush before a dude who is tougher then 50% of vanilla bosses? I hope he's proud of what he did.

Ahem, back to Rellana topic. I'm having REAL difficulty reading her moveset. Especially those 10 hit combos that end with heavy hit & flourish at the end.. except its not the end, and there's like, 4 more hits after this. And then at some point, the next chain starts. Not sure where, but definitely before I'm able to have an attack window. Kinda like falling into giant blender. To make matters worse, I'm pretty sure her hits connect more often then mine do.
Also, I have 60 vigor, best +HP medallion equipped, heavy armor, and still there's a lot of moves that kill me in 2 seconds.
My best tries so far is when I IGNORE her moveset, and just wailed on her with attacks.

Playing as a 66 str hammer dude. Advice? Thoughts? Prayers?
I'm not complaining by the way, having a blast with DLC so far.
Or, well, rather having my ass blasted, at the moment..

I would love to, but unfortunately she is way too pretty of a boss to kill her with summons. Would be a waste of money

Rellana is a pretty bad boss in my opinion. She has way to many and long attack combos with literally no break in between and extremely high speed. Initially tried to just block through her combos with a tower shield and counter towards the end of a combo but it is so difficult to even judge when her combos end. Quite often it looks like she's done and I can punish only for her to pull out 1-3 more attacks and hit me in the face. Oh and then 50% she puts magic on her swords (fire and ice) and I can't even block through her combos anymore because every blocked attack still causes damage.

Did I mention that she occasionally also does slashes from the side that hit me even though I'm blocking? Oh and she has high poise meaning you can't really interrupt her combos.

Anyway blocking was out and she was to fast for me to reliably dodge her attacks. I can't parry so I'm literally out of defensive options. In the end I pulled out mimic and had her just constantly switch focus to attack her when possible. And even then it took several attempts and I died on the try she went down. Mimic did the final hit.

I really hate this kind of design though. It's not even about strategy or good gameplay. It's just pure speed and reaction time. It's the kind of design that killed real-time strategy games for me - to much happening to quickly.

My strat so far was to dodge big hits, and trade into small ones (not many actual windows to attack without trading), and it works.. until she buffs her swords. Too much damage afterwards. I decided to collect a bit more whatchemajinks, that boost your character. I didn't go to the first big dungeon yet.

She is hyper-armor the boss fight, from the clip I saw earlier. Someone did a full R1 string on her, and she stood rock-solid. Methinks she is over-tuned slightly.

Oh, yeah, she does not stagger whatsoever. Unless you poise-break her completely, which is NOT easy, even with greathammer & poisebreaking physick buff. There is no interrupting her. Only dodging strikes.

Indeed. It's something of a general problem with the enemies. Everyone hits like a truck while you chip away at their health. Rellana in addition to hitting like a truck also the speed of an F1 car...

Initially I just wanted to use block to somewhat learn her attack patterns and maybe switch to dodge rolls afterwards. The way she constantly turns and manages to still push about 80% of her attacks into your direction makes that extremely difficult though.

Even Malenia and Maliketh are more predictable and avoidable in terms of damage than Rellana. Malenia's standard moveset can mostly be avoided by simply rolling forward past her and then attacking her from behind.

Rellana has 5-10 strike combos where you dodge the first and second and get immediately hit by the third and potentially fourth if you are anywhere near her because she just turns around mid moveset. And then between combos you may have time for one attack befor she goes into her next moveset. I've seen her move instantly to the next moveset without time for punishment where my attempt to attack her resulted in getting my face smashed.

And where Malenia's waterfowl dance is pretty damn terrible for me (I killed her 4 times but never felt like I actually defeated waterfowl dance) Rellana's moveset as a whole feels like constant waterfowl dance with it becoming more extreme from 50% onward.

Oh and Rellana has that moon attack that strikes three times where you're basically dead if you get hit by the first one because it just stuns you and keeps hitting you without a chance to roll out of it from what I've seen (I only saw that attack once and killed her afterwards by using mimic summon)
