Whats the appeal of fist weapons?

They may look cool, deal good damage, have unreasonably high poise/stance damage and are fast. However, despite that are short as ♥♥♥♥ in range. I'd have an angerism missing 90% of my attacks.

I'm doing a fist run right now. Yes, the abysmal range is incredibly frustrating with a lot of bosses. Couldn't hit Black Blade Kindred anywhere but is spindly little legs.

Still fun though. I love parrying with a backhand.

Honestly, considering my great weapon of choice is the Pickaxe?
I'm super used to being shafted by range. So I get why fist-users are able to adjust to it too. If I didn't like using greatshields so much when I'm in melee range, I'd likely give them an honest shot, but I'm admittedly hot garbage at the dodge game.
