I admit my knowledge of the character comes from the anime/film versions, rather than the manga, so it may be incomplete--but there are certain lines that, once crossed, cancel out any "complexities" that character might have.

It may be a personal failing, but yeah, the whole "I'm going to sexually assault my former trusted ally in front of my former best friend after getting the rest of my men slaughtered to fuel my ascension to demonhood" bit was just a bit much for me to care about whatever Griffith might have gone through previously.

I am not going to lie to you, that part was super rough to read and quite shocking too.
But the whole reason why this scene exist is to enhance how devoid of any humanity Femto is. He isn't Griffith anymore.

Griffith was a cool headed, cold calculator type of individual. He was patient, he made sure to move at just the right pace in everything he did. When Guts left, it broke him. Because while he didn't admit it, he considered Guts as the closest thing to an equal to him.

Griffith then rushed his plans, that caused him to be caught and mutilated for years. When he finally gets out of there, it is at the hands of the one that caused him that suffering (in his own mind, of course). During the last scene that we see him as Griffith, the man, we see him internally fighting to NOT succumb to the power, but he clearly realised that he was broken and there was no way for him to get into a position of power and achieve his selfish dreams anymore. Furthermore, Guts was now equally loved and respected as him and Casca was now the Hawk Band's head. She did what he couldn't do anymore. There was NOTHING left for him, and in that sense, we can understand his despair.
Imagine if you are in his position. Femto, is NOT Griffith. Femto is an absolute dark being with no humanity, and it is shown by the way he takes revenge in that scene.

Off topic, but so is this thread:

I really wish Miura was still around to supervise the work. As slow as Berserk releases were... they were still coming.

Who knows if the revived Griffith is worthy of forgiveness or if he doesn't have dark Femto motives. All I know is that he did wrong front of Guts... and now Caska and Guts have some unresolved tension... and Guts kinda doesn't have a motive to chase Griffith after their talk.

So what would've been next? Forgiveness?

Guts going off on his own would have made sense in the past... but now he's got a make-shift family.

Brother, may Miura rest in peace. But I agree with you 100%. We know that those closest to him know the details of how things should end so it is assumed that these persons would know the kind of details that you speak about, but we may never truly know.

I strongly believe that Guts would need to fight off the Brand regeardless, however I think that Guts could go on a path where he would defeat Femto to 'liberate' his old friend's soul. I think this would be a neat closure to Guts's story as it would also save his own soul from the hatred he lived for most of his life.

Also, thanks for the explanation on Griffith. Like I said, my knowledge of Berserk is limited to the animations, rather than the manga, so I knew I was working with a partial understanding of the character--but given my experience of Griffith to this point, I don't think my view of him is going to change.
