How to behold the story?
I have 400 hours in the base game and I have no idea what is going on in the game at all. Not even on the theme level. Yeah, I know some basic facts but they don't make a convincing and coherent story. So now with dlc release I am planning new playthrough and I want to try to understand what is going on but I have no idea how to do that. If you say read the descriptions that doesn't help me at all. Those are random facts that don't merge into wholesome story.
So what should I do if I want to get to know the story without looking on youtube? (which by the way I did it to some degree and that didn't help either)

I'd recommend just looking up the story on youtube both vaatividya and smoughtown are good for this.

If you really want to have a full grasp on the story without youtube, you need to piece it together yourself by reading a lot of different item descriptions, lore snippets, dialogue from npcs and phantoms.

Without looking at YouTube?

Play the game, read everything, use your brain to piece together the dots.

if you can't do that, you are probably not familiar with this style of narrative. Not much you can do about that apart from exposing yourself to it more, and in a few years it will click.
There are a lot of lore in item's description, and in sourroundings of key area.

listen to what NPC's say, piece things together, read the big swords around the open world (youll see field with nothing but swords in the ground, and a single huge sword with glowing text on it) read item descriptions, especially key items.

or just go watch youtube videos under "elden ring lore explained"
