The new "Steam Family" feature fixes that problem, by allowing you to choose, wether you want to play your own copy or the copy of a family-member (can't choose, if there are no differences in DLC ownership).

Still in beta, though; Steam --> Settings --> Interface and from "Beta Participation", choose "Steam Families Beta". All people, who want to family share need to do this. The authorization process is also much simpler with a bunch more QoL features, like being able to share games, while in-game yourself (with the exception of the game, you're currently playing):

NEW SOLUTION I found a workaround that will work if you don't have 2 people with Elden Ring in the Steam family share. exit the family share, close steam, open it again and rejoin the family.

Family share is supported, just go onto another game that 2 people have from your family share, change the preferred copy to the other one, then go back to elden ring. That worked for me and the DLC is downloading now. Hope this helps someone :)

I can't believe this worked.
To those who are confused.

1. Find a game in your personal library that someone in your family also have purchased.
(In my case my brother and I have Baulder's Gate 3.)
2. In the Main page after selecting the game there's the "From your Steam library. Change preferred copy"
(It's below the Green Play Button and above the "store page/dlc/communityhub" navbar.
3. Select that "Change preferred copy"
4. A over-window will popup and select your family member's version of the game and select "Confirm"
5. Select "Change preferred copy" again
6. Select your personal version of the game and select "Confirm"

The DLC will immediately start downloading

With the old family sharing, you simply can't play your friends copy at all. With the new family sharing in beta, if your friend is in-game playing Elden Ring, it will default to your copy of Elden Ring, when launching the game. If they aren't in-game, you get to pick which copy to play.

There may be issues with your save though, if you switch between a copy of ER with and without DLC, so always make backup saves.

No. With the new Steam Families, you cannot share a game, while playing that game. If you wanna co-op, you both still have to own the game.

But now you can share the rest of your library, while in-game, which was not possible with the old Family Sharing.
