Were the dungeons and repeat bosses a result of lack of care, or lack of time?
I think it's pretty ironic that the very first dungeon you find you're fighting imps and burial watchdogs, and then 100+ hours later (first playthrough) you're still fighting those exact same trash mobs. There is no way that the same dev team that designed Anor Londo consciously made this decision without there being serious time / budget restraints.

The same goes the bosses and the endgame areas. Why are there so many resused enemies in the haligtree (a decent area), and virtually 0 new ones in mountaintops of the giant. Consecrated snowfield has the latenna archers and that's basically it. As for the bosses, why are there two Margits?, two Godricks. two Astels, two Godfreys, two redwolfs, two moghs, what feels like 50 + erdtree burial watchdogs, Godskins, crystallions, nights cavalry, and enemies ripped straight out of the open world posing as bosses (I don't have a problem with the erdtree avatars because the logic is sound as to why theres so many). It's the equivalent of making every blackknight in DS1 a boss.

"But you can just skip them" this is a bad take. You're going to run into repeat bosses on your first playthrough (which is the one that matters the most) and there are some non optional reskins (unless you want to not do all remembrances). This is also poor logic because I should be allowed to engage with the world and improve my build without having to fight multiple awful reskins every playthrough. It's completely unreasonable to just skip out on vey important items like that.

Why do I care so much if I hate the game? I don't hate the game (not anymore) and when I like something I'm still going to be critical and understand some of the bad aspects of it like DS1's endgame or DS2's hitboxes. So what went wrong. Also if the DLC has a single reused boss or enemy I am gonna cope very very hard (more than usual)

Too much map, it has to be filled with something.

So they overpromised and ran out of time is what your saying?
I would like to know too, this game would be much better with the complete removal of all side dungeons that aren't unique or inspired in any way, the overworld could use some trimming of the vast open fields of nothing too.

probably a bit of both, but im going to let it slide a bit since this is fromsofts first open world game

I mean that it's a huge open world game, and it's unrealistic to expect every single enemy to be new and original.
Frankly, I have never player an DS game, and maybe that's a blessing since I can accept the game as it is, instead of trying to compare it to a not open world game.

DS1 had two (three) asylum demons. Multiple Capra Demons and Taurus demons. Two Hydras. Multiple moonlit butterflies. The DLC is a region that was in the base game, just a thousand years in the past.

Re-used assets have always been a thing.

Well yeah that’s why I mentioned DS1’s poor endgame, I 100% agree that it was very poor.

I actually like this though. It adds a sense of continuity to the world and connects things.

because it's not possible or even worth it to fill a map this big with only unique things and fighting something more than once is not an inherently bad thing, just a preference some people have

people will fight the same monster hunter enemy 100 times for materials but cry about fighting one of elden ring's bosses 10 times, or they will play any other open world game that has waaaaaaaaay less variety then elden ring while keeping their mouth shut.

Basically, assuming that you never played open world games before, now you know how they work and can just not buy them in the future if it bothers you this much. I don't mind fighting one enemy more than once, the gameplay is fun, I still get rewarded for it and it's still satisfying because I can have a ''you gave me some trouble before but now I know how to stomp your ass'' moment.

+ world building wise it makes way more sense that there would be a species/multiple creatures of one type than a completely unique guy everywhere

Its an open world game and Fromsofts very first attempt at the genre. To expect every enemy to be different is kinda unrealistic in my opinion. With one exception being Tree Spirits those things can go die in a fire. I much prefer the open world concept of Elden Ring to DS3 which feels like i'm running down a crowded hallway. Now that's not to say that the game couldn't use a more varied enemy roster, but I digress.

It's their first go at making a proper open world game. They didn't really know what they were doing and it shows.

I expect they'll do better with Elden Ring 2. Heck, we might see some big improvements just in the DLC.

Nooooooo don't criticise my billion dollar company, bait bait bait bait

Eldenring is fun for 1st playthrough but gets boring quick because you fight same reskin boss and those underground dungeon feel very random generated
darinbob Feb 25, 2024 @ 9:00pm
Yup, it's a HUGE game. Of course some minor bosses get re-used. Sometimes it makes sense - watchdogs in catacombs seem like the normal thing that would be re-used by the ancient peoples who built catacombs... Even DS1 reused bosses, and sometimes that's fun when you get your revenge on the Capra Demon; but here you get your revenge on the intro boss later on.

On a technical aspect it saves space.
From a design standpoint I subconsciously felt like everything was a genre trope. Here's a giant play space that has these themed activity centers scattered through out.
The only PVE thing that really stood out to me was the repeat Legacy Dungeon bosses via field event or evergaol. Those encounters felt off.
