What's the legit way of defeating a boss?

So I just defeated Margit (or some said I was carried) I summoned a tarnished player and I finally won against him. I was told I was carried and I played horribly. What's the unwritten rule to say I finally beat a boss the legit way? Because how I see it, I'm using the tools to help me succeed and played it fair and square.

But It doesn't seem like that's the case when you're playing a game like Elden Ring. So my question is, how do I make a legit win against a boss? I would like to fight Margit again if that's even possible.

As long as you're not using 3rd party tools or mods to make yourself invincible or do a million damage (IE: actively "cheating") then your kill is "legit". It's that simple.

It's your game, play it the way you want. If you want to use tools like coop or summons to make things easier, go for it. If you don't. That's fine too.

As long as you beat the boss that's all that matters. Half the fun in games like this is finding a method that lets you win.

Don't believe anyone who says you're playing the game 'wrong'. Elden Ring is largely a single-player game. As long as you're having a good time and not actively harming someone else's experience then you're playing it correctly.

The opinions of others really don't matter in this case. They're not the one playing the game after all. Why should you care what they think? A win's a win.

The "correct" way to play is whichever way gives you the most enjoyment after beating a boss. If you felt fine summoning to beat Magrit after several attempts, then that was the way to play.

. . .in no way should you listen to the experts ("Don't go over level XY", "Magic makes the game too easy, better to not use. . .", "For a true FromSoft experience, don't summon", etc.) in how YOU derive enjoyment from a game.

I'd say the one way to "incorrectly" beat a boss is by using exploits. Unless the summoned player LITERALLY did all of the fighting and you stood around and did absolutely nothing (it seems like both of you worked together on Margit, so this isn't the case), you beat the boss properly!

The only legit way is completely naked with absolutely no equipment and your fists only. True test of knowledge of bosses moves and timings, tests of patience and ability to focus for as long as it takes.

It's sarcasm by the way, no matter what you do short of that and I guarantee there's going to be at least one guy unhappy with how you play the game.

P.S. Ah yes of course, how can i forget soul level 1, too.

legit way is simple don't summon others to kill them for you. But as long as you are enjoying the game it don't matter.
