Why do people like PvP in this game?
it seems super jank, every time I strike at someone the attack lands like a full second later. My internet isn't ♥♥♥♥, it's fiber, but this makes the game really infuriating for a game that's all about making the "right moves at the right time". I don't care about being invaded if the combat is responsive - but it NEVER IS. This is making me wish for a co-op only mode of this game because summons are half the fun of it, but the pvp aspect of the summoning is just borked and not actually fun. Why do people still support this mechanic?

As a non PVPer myself (100% a PVE player) I would argue that its the uniqueness of the multiplayer experience in a Action RPG setting where you can make some crazy build/character, by progressing the game and go take that build to the help others, invade others, or fight others in the arena.

As much as I dislike most PVP in souls games I even admit there is really not other multiplayer experiences like it where you are playing a normal singple player RPG ans then you can just drop into another persons world to kill them. this is why I believe people have enjoyed these games online for so long even with the desycn issues, internet issues, trolls, hackers,...etc.

The people who like souls pvp are weirdos. Souls pvp has always been bad and will probably always be bad.

It's a glorious mess. It's a kusoge.

There's little point to opening oneself to invasions until you've basically beat the game, for access to as many advantages as possible, AKA the same advantages an invader will have to deal with two or more adversaries. A few too many decent items and equipment lay at practically end-game, so the PvP system doesn't exist(at least for me) until that point. I'm also opposed to ganking - either giving or receiving ganks.

Also, re-specing for PvP mid-playthrough is tedious, and sometimes necessary depending on the build/progress. So, the system doesn't really have enough synergy or restrictions on twinking to encourage me to even play online for the majority of my play. It's just there to "punish" co-opers and appease the PvP community from the Souls games by at least being here at all.

Because it's fun. Duh.

People like the PvP in this game because it's honestly being carried by the good quality of the base content and systems, like the customization, weaponry, etc. Anything that's directly part of the PvP systems kind of sucks. Not only have the basic mechanics of PvP content not been updated at all, even to account for new features like the open world, but Fromsoft has even backslid somewhat by removing the interesting bits from previous games that do work, like Covenants. PvP is so incredibly stunted. Even without any earth-shattering changes, there are a plethora of really easy features that would make PvP much more interesting, like for example a little win-rate meter for Arena matches. It's being tracked already, that's how people have those vague little badges, but it's not visible in any way.

I understand why the rewards for invasions are light and there is no scoring system. Because the last thing we want is people farming special rewards or ranks.

What would be cool is a UO style title system. Depending on your behaviour and experience you could get different titles. https://www.uoguide.com/Reputation
On one hand, yes, covenants are a little tedious, but they actually encourage the average casual player to participate in multiplayer content. Because right now the only things that are really incentivizing someone to play PvP stuff while they're going through the game for the first time are rune arcs (big whoop) and being able (theoretically) to access Mohg slightly faster. Whereas in DS3 for example, people trying to get the unique equipment are much less likely to be running ganking squads and one-shot builds and all that nonsense. Those will always be part of the game. But when that's every interaction, I feel like that starts to drag the game down and make it less fun for people starting out.

Are covenants the best option available? Heck no. But they're a fair sight better than the gaping void of suck that Elden Ring PvP has.

That title system does look like a cool option.

Noe, I don't think I agree that every interactions is gank squads or one shots. I say that because I have done hundreds of invasions, coops, and hours with taunter tongue on and it's just not the case. I actually think Elden ring had come closest to position the invader as just a really tough enemy/mini boss than any other souls game and a large part of that is the lack of solo invading. It does however mean that invading really isn't beginner friendly. And it really is one of those things you have to do a bunch to get good at
Yeah fair, I was exaggerating somewhat. But I think we're agreeing on the main point that I was getting at, which is that PvP in Elden Ring really isn't beginner-friendly. And that there are ways to greatly improve the system.

arena pvp is just a bad fighting game, can be fun but id reccomend people who exclusively do arena pvp to pick up a good fighting game instead

invasions are an assymetrical mess with potential for a lot of chaos and its fun to be disruptive and essentially act as an extra boss fight against others

Duels are where it's at...I usually find a good opponent and keep looking for their sign all night lol. You can kinda filter out who you want to play against and who you don't..haven't tried the arena...never felt they would be any better as I like 1v1

The advantage of the arena is that you can very quickly find an approximately equal matchup on equal footing. The disadvantage is that the footing is one of three very boring circles. One is blue. One is yellow. One is red and has some tiny pillars.

PvP in general? It offers a unique skillset to learn and master beyond the PvE, it adds variety to the game (especially compared to static PvE), and it allows for unique roleplay opportunities and interactions.

Invasions specifically? I find them very compelling because having players fighting in a level puts a lot of pressure on you to take a bunch of different skills - map knowledge, PvE fighting knowledge, and PvP knowledge - and employ all of it at once for something more than the sum of its parts.

You could always try the Seamless Coop[www.nexusmods.com] mod if you have people to play with - it will remove random invaders, and my understanding is that it often improves connection quality because it cuts EAC out of the picture (heck, if it's good enough you can even turn PvP on and structure your own invasions).

Because people love destroying noobs.
It's like when they smurf in a competitve game 2 league lower than their actual level because they can't be arsed doing efforts.
