first you must defeat morgott at leyndell to unlock the giant mountains, then go light the bonfire thing after the giant boss fight, returning to leyndell and youll have to fight godfrey/ hoarah loux where you originally fought morgott; defeating hoarah loux will unlock the fog door to the final fight.

You got the cutscene at the forge of giants, then came back and killed Godfrey the First Elden Lord and you cannot enter?

Yes, i beat the giant and then went to azula, defeated maliketh and then i went back and beat sir gideon and godfrey but still no access
