It's all about fashion souls, mate.

I always play armorless, wearing only a Godskin Noble Bracelets with the Gold Waistwrap.

What the point to play armorless?

Lightroll, or to showcase how massive your dong is

Armor is only for those who plan on getting hit :umbralmoth:

But to answer your question, its really up to what you think looks cooler. In PvE your armor stats dont matter that much.

Blue Dancer Charm, which is a strong boost to attack rating and spell damage - or memes, I guess

White Reed looks like ♥♥♥♥, it's even worse than the actual ♥♥♥♥ armor, so I vote for Banished Knight.

The Banished Knight armour is peak fashion, especially if you manage to get your hands on the unaltered chestpiece and helmet. The cloth of the helmet will cover up the eyesore of a shoulder-horn, and the unaltered chestpiece has a pretty cape to boot.
Sadly the chestpiece is late-game, but the helmets cloth still applies to the capeless version.
Go with the Banished Knight armour for now, you can always swap it out for something else later down the line.

Armor didn't matter much in DS1 and DS2 where it gave basically flat damage reduction (not exactly, but close enough). The short version is that armor really only had a noticeable effect against enemies that already didn't do much damage to you.

In DS3 and ER, they switched to percentage based damage reduction for armor, and that made it actually useful for not dying against heavy hitters (i.e. most bosses). So armor is actually good now.

One of the main reasons to wear armor in any Souls game (except DS3) is poise. I don't like how overly simplified the poise system is in ER PvE, where you either have 51+ poise or you do not. Still, I find the game much more enjoyable with 51 poise. It hurts because I'm trying a Blue Dancer Charm build and the lack of poise is making itself readily apparent.

101 is the next and final poise breakpoint. With 101 only the guaranteed stagger attacks will stagger you.

Yeah i forgor about poise when i made my last comment. I completely forgot all the poise stats after 1.10 💀

There's another breakpoint at 151, I believe. In any case, the highest poise you can get with armor alone is 100 with the Bullgoat set. You need the Bullgoat's Talisman to reach 101, and 151 is only attainable with temporary poise buffs.

There's such a huge difference between having 51 or higher poise and not. If you have less than 51 poise, it becomes so easy to get stunlocked. I'm not saying we should go back to how slow and passive DS1 was, but I don't really like how fast and aggressive enemies have gotten in ER.

Something that I think could go a long way towards improving things would be to add limited movement while being staggered. A stumble, if you will. Perhaps getting staggered while holding a direction makes you stumble in that direction but without the ability to redirect yourself. So if you're at a full gallop on your horse you might maintain your speed but lose the ability to turn while getting staggered. Mounted combat is pretty awful and I hope it gets some improvements in the DLC, or at least a major rework in the next game. Ah well, we can hope.
