How does the tarnished know to get into random coffins?
No, but seriously who would crawl into a random coffin and know that it leads somewhere or has magic?

There's a little prompt that floats by the fourth wall, which tells the tarnished which button to press to get inside.

For the same reason we wake up in a church and think "♥♥♥♥ it that 12 armed ♥♥♥♥♥ that fell from the sky looks like a fun time" don't inject logic into the lands between, because it will be wielded like a hammer to bonk you with.

This is one of those things that I think was a lazy carry-over from Dark Souls. In Dark Souls 1, there was only one coffin you could crawl in, and it was in the Catacombs, a place where it makes sense to find coffins. IIRC, you actually see a skeleton shut the lid on you, so it's implied that the skeletons are carrying the coffin to Gravelord Nito, but you don't actually get to see it. It's something that feels mysterious but fits within the context.

But in Elden Ring it's like coffin-based travel is just taken for granted. It isn't even mysterious like you crawl into the coffin and just suddenly find yourself elsewhere, no there's like this magical path of runes that pulls the coffin along like some kind of magical train tracks. It's so weird and out of place.

Dunno bout y'alls Tarnished, but mine played DS1 beforehand. When he saw an interactable coffin in ER he knew that clambering in and sealing the top was the only logical thing to do.

My character knows nothing of coffins. However, he did live through 2011 and is well practiced in lying on/in things.

Same reason how the chosen undead knew to get into a coffin to be taken to Nito, same reason the bearer of the curse knew getting into a coffin takes them to reindeer f*ckland (and become a girly boy), same reason the ashen one knew a coffin leads to every where...... reasons.

But are you not basically undead yourself in these games? So innate knowledge maybe? That all undead know about.

The main character is completely batsh*t crazy. Who else would spend hours shooting arrows at giant mutant crows, eventually kill almost every person they meet, and jump off of every cliff they encounter just because a message tells them to?

They're just hopping into coffins hoping that they'll be buried and die.

I don't understand the question. My Tarnished gets into EVERY coffin...

I think the coffins are not that random. They are always found near falls in the underground which clearly inspired by Greek afterlife Hades with its rivers and whatnot( I smell GRRM!) They must be mythologically significant since they function similarly to Chiron’s boat and a resident of lands between would know/heard about them.
