Straight Swords should be longer
Title - I want to return to the game and play sword + board to try something new(I don't like shields, usually) but the swords in this game and the guard counter accompanying them are pitiful and feel broken to use compared to prior games, and I'm wondering if everyone forgets they exist after finding literally any other weapon.

Dual swords are alright. There are a few with adequate length for what they offer, and others with the proportions of a toilet plunger.

Small bit of context: https://www.kultofathena.com/product/ronin-katana-one-handed-italian-arming-sword/ - A modern "straight sword" which the "longsword" in these games is meant to represent. Has a blade length of roughly 30in or 75cm.

If you observe the straight swords in this game, they are about 75% of that on average. This makes it difficult with the unrealistic moveset to actually hit anything consistently. A very punishing weapon class.

man wants realistic weapons in a fantasy game lol
If you want to use a longer straightsword, use the Nobles' Slender Sword. The droprate is pitifully low, but it is the longest straightsword available.
You can grind for it relatively conveniently at the Debate Parlor bonfire in the Raya Lucaria Academy, then just run out and destroy the wandering nobles to the left, both the ones digging around and the ones kneeling before a few mages above them.

Skill issue

The swords in the game are not "realistic". And they are not meant to be. Same applies to the movesets. The length of RL swords has 0% to do with the gameplay in ER.

Yeah, straight swords are not the best choice for a sword and board build. Like you said, the range is lacking for that specific type of build. They are on the whole pretty great for status builds and/or as a caster's sidearm though. If you want to keep trying out shields, a spear or a halberd are better choices. If you really want a sword, a great curved sword is probably going to feel a lot better, or maybe one of the faster greatswords. If I remember my scaling right, the Magma Wyrm's Scalesword should do well with a strength build, and it has a surprisingly fast moveset.
