The meat of it is... it's hard for your machine to compete with other devices on your network, especially considering the amount of tv/movie streaming that happens these days, and the number of internet accessing devices. Yes router/internet speeds have increased considerably but congestion is real.
Again, just something to be aware of, the problem may not be your pc/windows setup.
Then you restarted, and tried without doing these things. I'd say we're narrowing it down, so don't give up hope just yet. Keep all unnecessary devices unplugged, for one thing, and try swapping the keyboard/mice around. Do you have any software installed related to them?
Also, in task manager, in the Startup tab, are any somewhat unnecessary/unrelated programs in the list? Could try sharing a screenshot if unsure
I hope this means I get to enjoy the DLC with no hiccups too, given it actually releases at some point.
So as to say, the Performance in this game has serious issues. I THINK I found a fix but I'm just kinda...hoping it's not some unnecessary variable I've missed. Try this tho;
1.) Download and open VibranceGUI, it's basically a program that lets you set a custom Nvidia vibrance level (great if you don't have an HDR monitor but want to at least get a color boost. Who knew!). UnClick the box that says "Never change in game resolution". Here's our first hint..
Then at the bottom select "add game" and select elden ring. Set the desired vibrance (or just match your nvidia vibrance for desktop if ya want) and set your screens resolution/refresh rate in the bottom pane. Mine is 3860x2160/165hz for example.
2.) Run the game with Vibrance GUI already open and do the following; go to settings and select "borderless", but let the resolution default back to the fullscreen res you had selected. THEN the magic step..
3) Because Vibrance GUI seems to change the resolution via the monitor's inherant possible presets, "open tabbing" by pressing the Windows key we inadvertantly override the 60hz lock that I personally blame for the stuttering in the game. So basically just press windows button twice after the second step.
I also capped my framerate with RTSS to 59.930 to try to help this game's awful framecap, but after doing this fix 60 on the dot seemed to be more responsove.
Also understand that this game will microfreeze if your ping gets high; the server that anticheat uses is AGGRESSIVE. Monster hunter does the same thing as well though, so could be a network throttling issue on clients end. But those big shuddery stutters in fullscreen are consistent and strangley seem to be an engine issue, as the framerate often stays right on 60 when they happen. I again posit that this is due to that ♥♥♥♥♥♥ 60fps cap paired with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ 60hz on most monitors.
Elden ring is not the only game affected by this. I had similar problems with Red Dead Redemption 2 while I was still troubleshooting Elden Ring. I don't have a controller but I assume this is an issue with any game that offers to seamlessly switch between controller and K&M and always checks and thus freezes briefly each time your PC refreshes to detect newly connected hardware and/or input devices. Though that's just my very best guess based on the things I've observed.
