By the way, here's a quick summary of which smithing stones you need for a given upgrade:
Regular smithing stones upgrade in groups of three, e.g. smithing stones 1 can get you to +3, smithing stones 2 up to +6, smithing stones 3 up to +9, etc.
For regular smithing stones, the first upgrade costs 2 stones, then 4, then 6, for a total of 12 stones to reach the highest upgrade level for that type of stone. So to get from +0 to +9 you'll need 12 each of smithing stones 1, 2, and 3.
Max upgrade level is +25 and requires an ancient dragon smithing stone.
Somber weapons only go up to +10. Upgrading requires only one somber stone of the same rank, e.g. to go from +6 to +7 you need a somber stone 7. There is no somber stone 10, and instead you use a somber ancient dragon smithing stone.
Smithing stones of all types except the ancient dragon stones (both types) can be farmed or bought (once you obtain the relevant bell bearing), so there's no need to worry about running out. That said, it's generally better to focus on a single weapon until you can reach the later areas of the game where infinite higher rank stones can be obtained.
one for all the great advice
you can upgrade to max with Iji near caria manor.
using Iji to do that doesnt require accepting melina/getting to RH.
of course you cant get a level 10 stone without visiting RH, so thats just theoretical.
