If I dislike all Souls style games would ER be any different?
I've been told by a few people that even if I didn't like any of the Souls games or any other of that style that I should still try ER because it's so good. I'm dubious and just want to see what others here have to say about it.

It looks pretty but I'm just not sold at all if it's a Souls combat style game.

Update: Jan 1 2024

OK, after reading all the comments, and they were very insightful and explained a lot about what I didn't know of the game compared the other ones I had played, I'm going to get the game and give it a try. If it takes me more than two hours (beyond the refund the timer) to find I don't like it then at worst I'm out $36 and it's not the end of the world. If by some chance I do like it then I got a new game I like.

I was sure this question I posed would be bashed to no end but it appears that many of you love this game and want others to like it for the same reasons you do and you made your cases and I'm convinced!

thanks very much!

What exactly do you not like about souls?
Because Elden ring is basically the next souls game but open world.

The combat and the movement mostly. I played a bit of Demon Souls back in the day and a lot of Bloodborne and that's about it.

Wondering if it still feels like I'm in a nightmare stuck in molasses when in combat or walking around.

This is the most welcoming, accessible and overall enjoyable entry of the franchise. Buy Elden Ring and judge the rest by yourself.

The movement got upgraded a lot, actually.
You now have jumping and much more variety in how to fight, movesets expanded.
Controls are better overall.
Best thing for you would be to try it out, and if it feels the same - refund it before 2 hour mark, or just download it from somewhere you trust.

ER is Souls, but open world, yes. But also - a map(!), a compass(!), some explanation of stats(!), lots of fast travel, much more variations in builds, etc.

I have no desire to play DS games but ER I put hundreds of hours into, if that's any help. You have aids in combat if you choose in coop or spirit ashes if playing solo or offline.

Tough one.
I easily rage quit. Don't know why, but not in ER. Fights are sometimes insanely heavy.
I love this game.
Someone is bound to have bought this game of your people. Ask around and have a go on their machine.
The punishment for death is much lower in this game with a respawn point in front of almost every boss, so you can just jump right back into the action and dont need to rerun parts of the area. I think that is the most important aspect for you even if you said nothing about it. Now buy it.

Watch some Lets plays on youtube, it's the best way to find out if you like it.

I find it very punishing but it's also very beautiful and the story so far interests me.

Anyway, I cannot decide for you.

I never got past the first boss of any Souls game previous to Elden Ring and I absolutely LOVE this game. The open world makes all the difference. If you are getting smashed by a boss or an area, go elsewhere and level up a bit, get some better gear, etc. You are never stuck.

@@ edit to add, playing Elden Ring has actually taught me quite a lot about how to progress in the older Souls games even.

Most people who don't like souls games get turned off by how hard they are. Elden Ring essentially lets you set your own difficulty based on what weapons or ashes of war you chose, if you use the summons or not, if you summon players for aid or not and if you grind out some levels instead of just plow through content.

Basically if the only reason you disliked souls game is difficulty Elden Ring gives you multiple ways to offset the difficulty.

No. Elden ring is basically dark souls 3 but open world

It's the same. Only better.

It's more accessible, that's true in some ways. There's more choices on where to go. With seamless coop, it's fantastic in multiplayer. And there's improvements everywhere.

But it's 100% the same in terms of combat. People might suggest otherwise, but they're the same type that said Bloodborne is vastly different. The skills you picked up in those games still apply here. If you hate the combat system, I can't say the game has altered it much in any meaningful way, outside of Horse combat which is pretty fun, especially in Seamless coop.

I played all the souls games as they were released going back to Demon's Souls on PS3. In my opinion, the world in Elden Ring is very beautiful and compelling to explore, but the quests are far too obscure, even compared to the older games, and every boss is a hyper aggressive beast and uses delayed attacks, which makes it harder (and more annoying) to progress than previous games.

If you prefer faster action with your character, then I think you will like Elden Ring over the previous games. In that case, I would also suggest you check out Sekiro, which is also made by From Software. I think you will like Sekiro the most if you are looking for fast character movement and combat.
