What should pure mage do when he runs out of FP?
Mages use FP so their spells are not unlimited, right?
So, how can a mage defend himself when he runs out of FP?

Have a decent Int scaling weapon and/or drink from your cerulean flask if you want to cast again.

That's it?
I mean, dexterity warrior can hit indefinitely but mage will run out of flasks eventually.

Yes, you need to manage your mana (and health flasks) as a mage. You can increase Mind to get more FP. But always remember that mage is eazy mode :p Meanwhile I ran through the legacy dungeons with my second char (first was mage) with basically double the number of health doses just smashing everything ^^

As a mage you should still be able to fight with a weapon. There are plenty of special INT scaling weapons, and its easy enough early on to scale any generic weapon to INT with a magic ash of war.

As far as survivability goes light shield parrying or some of the lighter class medium shields are available.

Assassin's Gambit/parry and blue dagger talisman and start stabbing. Use a 2hit riposte weapon for twice the procs.
Spells are so overpowered and resources so abundant that you shouldn't be running out of FP in the first place. If you're struggling then increase MND and/or equip talismans like the ancient horn. Fully focused casters with 80 INT or FTH and no investment into STR/DEX can still use some weapons, although if they don't scale wtih INT/FTH then the damage will be extremely low so you should either pick a weapon that scales with INT/FTH or infuse one to start scaling with it. Even then your melee damage will be far worse than someone with 50 or 60 INT/FTH and more points in STR and/or DEX.

Consider new players with no ancient horn.

You can also kill the Deathbird in Weeping Peninsula to get the Sacrificial Axe and equip it offhand to gain some FP. That's especially useful at begin, when you don't have so much mind and less flasks.

Manage your mana. Save your spells for the more difficult fights and clear out simple mobs with a melee weapon.

FP consumption works the same for spell/arte/consumable use for any build. If you go heavy on FP consumption, you should have a healthy investment into cerulean flasks and MND. If you're running out of FP, you should revisit your build or your strategy.

What ancient horn? New players don't know where and what that is. You probably mean the Ancestral Spirit's Horn which can be acquired in the midgame, but not early on.

Or use cheaper spells.

I find that most things are dead before I run out of mana, this has been the case for every enemy aside from 1 boss which I cant remember the name, and mana was problematic cause I kept missing it when it teleported all over the dam 60000km arena
