Getting a smooth as butter experience
So I played Elden Ring at launch, had an absolute blast and thought I'd put it away until the dlc. Thing is, I've had the itch to play it again (as I want a SL level 125 character with double weapons) and I'm noticing stutter issues while rotating the camera which I don't remember being there before.

My question is to people with 1440p g-sync compatible monitors at 144 Hz. What settings do you use to get a smooth camera experience?

Currently, I have dropped the refresh rate to 60 Hz, capped the framerate to 59, have g-sync enabled with v-sync on fast. This seems to be giving me the best results.

Would be great to hear how others have improved their experiences!

Ray tracing got added, and it causes issue for tons of people. Try turning it off (pretty sure you can only change it from the main menu settings screen, not from the esc menu settings).

the game is capped to 60 FPS (60Hz) most monitors with high frequency have problems with this. and as LT2483 said, raytracing is not working good, deactivate it if it got activated ingame.

Yeah, maybe the ray-tracing is causing the problem. I have a 4080 so didn't expect that to be causing any issues to be honest. I know it's capped to 60, which is why I've tried reducing the native refresh rate and capping the fps. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Yeah, the issues with ray tracing don't seem to care how powerful your rig is. It's been implemented wrong, and so causes issues. Hopefully turning it off solves yours.

Yeah ray tracing in this game really reduces performance as there is no DLSS or FSR support. Even on the latest GPU's it can't hold 60fps with RT. The traversal stutters and stuttering in general are because of the latest ray tracing patch. Disabling it and the game will run just like you remember it.

Thanks all for the replies. I've turned it off and it seems better but maybe I'm looking back with rose tinted glasses? Maybe I was imagining spinning the camera with perfect smoothness. It's not that there are any stutters in the foreground, it just seems like the distances appear a little blurry/stuttery. Maybe if I disable depth of field..

with patch 1.04 and 1.06 they reduced the distance rendering and also some gras animation rendering to reduce some drawing issues ppl reported ( textures and enemies got invinsible for some).

The depth of field effect is only used for the realtime cutscenes. Objects in the distance are blurry due to chromatic aberration which cannot be turned off unless you use a mod.

Okay, cheers for the info.

I am gonna necro this because this is wrong af. Depth of Field is bugged and it will randomly reduce resolution of stuff without reason during normal gameplay. Turn that ♥♥♥♥ off
The game runs smooth for me, blurry as piss when in motion. 4k, 3080ti, r7 5800x3d. Yes, motion blur and ray tracing are turned off.

I have a Radeon 6700 XT and a 144 Hz AOC 24G2 freesync monitor. My smoothest frametimes seem to come from:
1. Setting Windows desktop display to native 1080p 144 Hz
2. Enabling the on-screen refresh rate display on my monitor (it has this feature built-in)
3. Running the game in Borderless Window at either 1080p or 1440p with Radeon Virtual Super Resolution (this adds more heat to my room in summer, though)

I use Riva Tuner to monitor my frametimes with a graph, and my monitor shows that indeed my Freesync is functioning because the refresh rate display fluctuates, whereas it is a stable 144 HZ while on the desktop.

Hello everyone, thanks for all your comments. I have managed to get a smooth experience at this point. The two key things I did was to lock my framerate using rivia tuner (comes bundled with afterburner), this helped flatten my frame times. And, (surprisingly) reducing the in game option controller ‘turn’ speed. Together, I can now comfortably move the camera around smoothly.
