Need some help understanding exactly what causes bans to happen when modding is involved
The anti cheat system detects modded files and bans accounts with said modded files. But what remains unclear to me are the specific conditions around said files.

#1. If I have mods in my game folder (inside the Mod Engine 2 folder for instance) will I get banned for them just being there while anti cheat is active?

#2. As far as my understanding goes, the 'dinput8.dll' file needs to be in the game folder in order for mods to even be active. Does this mean I can have all all the mods I want and not get banned as long as dinput8.dll is not present in the game folder when playing online
(provided I don't play a previously modified save)?

#3. Can mods affect unloaded saves? I mean, just want to make sure my vanilla saves are left unaltered and can't trigger a ban if they've been in the save folder while mods have been active.

#4. If I have a modded character save file, will I get banned just by it existing in the save folder, or do I have to actually try to load the save while anti cheat is active in order to trigger a ban?

Mod Engine 2 will run the game in offline mode and therefore you're not running the game in online mode, Make sure to use the mod engine launcher and not steam launcher.

Always back up your saves and make a new one reffering to vanilla. As far as I know, only certain mods automaitcly have seperate saves.

1. You will highly likely get banned because the EAC is pretty dumb - can't distinguish whether mod is cosmetic or changes to ultra widescreen mode.

3, Not as far as I know except if you use the Seamless Coop mod that uses different save files.

4. Yes, same as No.1

Not entirely true and I will explain in regards of #1:

Mod Engine 2 will load the game for you, but it wont load the game with EAC. EAC is automaticly turned off if you launc hthe game through modengine2_launcher or if the mod has features (Randomizer, etc) that you set preloading the game it will offer the option to launch game through it too.

This only is the case if you where to run the mods directly from steam and launch the game from steam.

So basically, if I use seamless coop, I won't get banned when going back to playing a vanilla character even if the mods are still present (not active) in the game folder?

Reading Op's states EAC is active - i.e., running game online.

I have a friend who's also playing the game. He does not have seamless coop and overall very little interest in mods, so I just want to make sure I can jump back to my vanilla character every once in a while and play online with him.

Ensure you don't overwrite the vanilla save game files from Seamless Coop save files you will be OK.

Yes but then he's launching the game wrong without moad engine 2 as mod engine 2 will garantee to run w/o EAC.

Sideloading as dinput8.dll is optional

With the introduction of a launcher we no longer need to rely on games loading via dinput8.dll and we can instead launch the game pre-configured. This frees up this module for anything else that relies on being sideloaded.

Thanks! But aren't those files already saved separately / in different formats? I have to manually swap the seamless coop save file with the vanilla save file each time I switch back and forth between modded and vanilla?

My bad, I haven't played ER for sometime and didn't know there's a new mod that disables EAC. Can you use cosmetic mods and Flawless Widescreen and play online?

Yes, except some who played Seamless Coop mod from the start thought they can copy over the vanilla save files so they don't have start from the beginning to rebuild their character.

I'm confused now. How's the Mod Engine 2 different to the original Anti Cheat Toggle mod?

You dont need to install mods to the game folder leaving your game intact, thus actually lowering the risk of being banned. Its very different and much better to use.

The mods are run from wherever you extract Mod Engine 2. (Extract mods in the mod folder of ModEngine2 folder..

Cheers @TTV, so it isolates the mod files in a separate folder which is not read when you play game online?

Indeed, cause to play online you would just need to use steam.
