Overall make your mind on build and pick class. You want to use magic but dont want to rely on bleed swords/etc? Choose something with high int and low arcane.
Also at high level difference between best and worst class for your build will be nearly non existent.
What's a good magic build that is simple? I guess arcane will complicate fights?
Any playstyle can be made easy with the right cheese equipment.
People dismiss VIT advice so I made two simple videos showing how crazy OP defence is in this game.

Also if you have difficulties with given part of game try to grind lesser enemies and level up or go in another direction. WHen I started my 1st game in limgrave I decided to head stormveil castle because it were the same region and had some difficulties which I wouldnt had (likely wouldnt had) if I ust went first to weeping peninsula.
But class is not important. Just up vigor first (30 is fine) and you're in easy mode.
Starting with a shield that 100% blocks physical damage is a godsend early on. And investing in strength to the point you get to use a greatshield? Super useful early and mid game. Most humanoid enemies' attacks will bounce off your shield. Strength also raises your defenses a bit, so you take less damage.
Keep in mind: using faith for incantation damage (like, throwing fireballs and stuff) doesn't work well unless you invest hard into it. But many weapons have low faith requirements and mostly strength or dexterity scaling. So even if you don't wanna bother with buff and utility spells, it opens up your options for weapons.
And to answer your question you can just use spirit summons if you want the game to be easy. No build required. "ARPG" btw.
- Start as Confessor (medium armor + good shield + good weapon + healing spell + stealth spell), they've got the most options so you can test basically all builds at once.
- Recommended starting gift: Golden Seed (healing flask upgrade)
- Follow the obvious path until you unlock the horse and levelling up, that makes exploration much easier
- Try out all the different gameplay styles and figure out what you wanna focus on
- If you wanna focus on spells, I recommend going for the dragon incantations (though they involve killing dragon bosses and finding two specific churches), they use FTH and ARC,
- If you wanna focus on big weapons, the Tree Sentinel's halberd (dropped by the boss right outside the tutorial area) is awesome
- If you like the shield + small weapon combo and tanky builds, you can stick with your starting weapon and focus on levelling HP, maybe with some STR as well for bigger shields.
- If you like stealth, there's a dagger called the Reduvia dropped by an NPC invader near the lake, you might need to level Arcane a few times to use it but it's completely worth it, it mostly scales with DEX.
Are these weapons essential for their builds, like, will I find it really hard until I get Op weapons? Or will any old dagger do, for instance, for a stealth build.
