Open Elden Ring, recognize the issue then make the diagnose see if it persists outside the game
If its a light drift you could increase the deadzone of the analogs on steam big picture configs, its a good shot to see if it settles
it worked?
to fix it, first of all try increasing the deadzone with either steam's controller settings or with DS4Windows (if your controller isn't an xbox one).
if that's not enough, please don't waste money buying a new controller yet. chances are that by opening it up (carefully) and just cleaning the analog's potentiometer, the issue will be solved. there are plenty of tutorials on youtube.
if even that doesn't work, you can try replacing the potentiometer. they cost very little, I bought 10 for less than 5€ including shipping, from ebay. better than spending another 50-60$ for a new controller.
if you do decide to buy a new controller... consider looking for an unofficial one that uses "hall effect" analog sensors, which can't drift because of the technology they use. don't give more money to the ones who deliberately decided to put inadequate hardware parts in their products just to sell more.
this isn't a baseless accusation, by the way. for example, sony's new PS5 "pro" controller has modular, replaceable analogs... which cost 20$ each. and guess what? the hardware parts of the analog itself are exactly the same. so they, too, will start drifting after roughly 400 hours of usage. if that isn't planned obsolescence I don't know what it is.
If you have anything plugged into USB ports, try unplugging it and see if that helps
Just go slow when you open the controller, the left and right buttons are spring loaded and the springs can go flying...
I bought a used DS4 controller a while back and i fixed it with the alcohol trick.
Don't use other types of alcohol as it can damage plastics.
maybe it tries to detect hacks from external devices, i dunno rly
now that you mentioned, my controller dont work properly when connected on the frontal USB door next to my headphones
to sum it up: try the back USBs
