activating divine bridge elevator from the top...I have screenshots

*I'm not 100 percent sure, but I believe Goldfrey has to be defeated for the divine bridge elevator to activate from the top. Bernahl letter was just a coincidence. This is not a shortcut at all. Just a unique way to enter the fortified manor, and I happened to do Volcano Manor quests after Lyndell when this elevator worked the first time. I was talking out of my ass when I thought I had a shortcut discovered.

I just used the top lever to get the elevator up to me, and it's another way to get into Lyndell. It works when Recusant Bernahl needs your help for a Volcano Manor contract. I have access to Lyndell, but the lift didn't work for me until I got the contract.
It feels very fitting to sneak into the manor from the side doors. You even get to pull that mysterious lever in the hallway after the virgin abductors.
I couldn't find this in the wiki or on Google/YouTube. Feels like I solved a damn mystery.

Will have to try on another play through. Took me about 10 mins and many deaths to pull off falling to the bottom without dying in order to activate the elevator.

I saw that video tutorial with the exploding physick tear, and then I LOL'd at all the bloodstain animations trying to do it.

I did manage to use the lift around 5 play through ago and I couldn't remember how, so I was trying to research it online.

You can also activate the taunter's tongue at the top and wait until an invader spawns at the bottom (or spawns at the top, but realizes what you are doing, decides to help and uses to finger to teleport to the bottom). Invaders can just pull the lever at the bottom, not sure if hunters can.

To me, this kind of makes the whole thing moot. Not much of a shortcut if it requires killing 2 shardbearers, opening the front door, AND going to Gelmir and completing 2 contracts first.

I was talking out of my ass a bit, and assumed it would work fully. xD I ended up having problems getting the same results in other playthroughs.
I tried to do a shortcut(the goal was NO medallions or great runes) in journey 2 by getting kidnapped in Raya Lucaria. The front doors to the VM are locked when you get kidnapped, so I had to collect the Dectus medallions anyway to do the 2nd contract.
I couldn't get the same results on Bernahl's contract when I used the teleporter trap this time. The top lever wouldn't work until (I'm guessing) I killed Godfrey the first time.
So yeah, it's definitely not a shortcut at all. It was just neat to use the two levers without exploiting anything.

I know this thread is rusty old, but I just wanted to add a little to it since I also just activated the lever from above and was curious as to why. And I stumbled upon this thread. I have not killed Godfrey and the Bernahl contract was active. I have not cleared anything inside Leyndell. However I have touched the first Grace in Leyndell.
There are 2 possibilties I consider that might have triggered it:
1. I used the portal in the deeproot depth close to Fia (Fortissax bossfight) to get into leyndall the first time.
2. I activated the summoning pool in that area and was once summoned to assist another person in leyndell as a phantom. We killed some mobs and host got killed eventually before reaching any boss. (Maybe getting close to that area as a phantom counts?)
