When I lose my runes, I always use a sacrificial twig or physick to make sure I don't lose a large amount of runes on my way there
In Selia Crystal Caves, there is a wooden ledge where a Kindred of the Rot is standing guard. Just off that ledge, there is a large shed lying on its side that you can jump into.
I did so, expecting a secret stash. There was none.
There was also no way out of the bottom of the shed. Theoretically, some super-ultra tricky jumping could get me out, but after trying for about 10 minutes and failing, I had to Memory of Grace my way out.
Cost me 30.000 runes, which was enough for a levelup at the time, but the humiliation was worth 10 times more to me.
I also try not to loose any runes and try to get them back first, when dying.
But, I have to say, it would be more relaxed to just spent runes, while you can and don't care about them, when you die. It's nothing more annoying to fight a boss and always have to pickup runes before caring about the boss.
I win.
