Halberds make me sad. Maybe I'm miss something?
This is PVP and PVE.

With the patch that reduced poise damage dome by hammers and great hammers, halberds just seem too good not to use.

My nightrider glaive hits harder, better
faster, stronger and longer than my great hammers.

So, do great hammers have some secret use or is it just a fashion statement at thus point?

Good point, just feels a bit annoying as im coming from DS3, where greathammers really felt stronger than halberds. Not to mention the shockwave they generated on every hit was really useful.

But you are right and this is a different game.

Left hand hand axe, right hand large club/rusted anchor it is!

Weapon balance sucks in this game. I think its one of the worst in a from soft game

I love great hammers as well and I've noticed several head scratchers. It used to be really bad where items such as Prelates and the Giant Crusher did massively reduced poise damage compared to other colossal weapons. Fortunately, it got buffed but I thought that they still needed more love.

It would make sense to my illogical brain if these hammers did less damage but increased poise damage. That way, they have a particular strategy around them. However, from my experience, it is better to use them for the fun and novelty of it rather than looking to optimize a particular strategy around them.

Hammers have, in my opinion, most useful damage type in the game: Strike.

Many enemies are vulnerable to it and very few somewhat resistant.

You are right but I like to pvp as much as pve and at the moment my upgrade materials are scarce so thrust damage seems better than strike for most cases, because of counter damage.

But it was fun melting stone enemies, bosses and skeletons with mt cyrved club, early game

Nightrider is solid, but so are greatswords/GH's/GA's/CGS'. Their buffs were ridiculous for pvp and their range is deceptively long with the increased forward locomotion. Just now quickly testing the glaive r1 against a wall versus the bloodhound's fang R1 and their range is identical. Testing that same distance against a great mace and it whiffs by the length of my character's left foot worth of distance.

Great hammers still do more stance damage than other weapons at or under it's class for pve. For PvP, greathammers are not able to be poised. None of them are. Those listed weapon classes also have R2's that are insanely better than any other weapon class now, and many of them blend well making them useful for timing mixups on top of that. Aside from most greataxes, they also have wide sweeps that are way more useful for turning without using FP.

Halberd running R1's are still ridiculous though, but there are clear strengths to the others. I wouldn't necessarily throw superiority either way. I think the better question would've been "why use hammers vs greatswords". They're virtually identical in terms of aoe/reach/speed, but hammers just don't have access to as many weapon arts.

Interesting info. I will test my large club in pvp more as I know they used to do a lot of poise damage in pvp but I think that was nerfed.

GSs feel bad to me, have in every dark souls game too, sadly.

Been enjoying 1 shotting people with the rusted anchors R2s since making the post so I have that in the back pocket.

All attacks from greataxes, greatswords, greathammers, curved greatswords, colossal swords, and colossal weapons are unable to be handled with poise. Only hyperarmor frames from certain spells/arts can protect against those, and then only knockdowns/grabs can interrupt hyperarmor. Halberds and reapers actually can be poised through on a 1 handed R1 only, but only if you have a massive 125 poise value (max possible of course being 133).

You can use this to see poise breakpoints for pvp.

I also personally prefer how the halberd looks and feels, but yea the other great weapons are ridiculous now.

Many thanks for this.

I will need to experiment with hyper armour. Hopefully, great hammer/axe R2s have some hyper armour, like on dark souls 3.

What i used on ds3 to greta effect was hand axe in left and the glaive in the right. But no halberds look like the classic glaive :'(

Yesss, I loved the BK glaive. The only one that looks close to it is Loretta's which just does not have good damage, even if you were to 99 every scaling stat it uses. The R1's are very nice on it, but guardian's swordspear also has those with more damage, less stat req, and infusions. Just ugly by comparison and shorter.

Haha i mean the weapon called just"glaive". As I always like mundane looking weapons. Hence thr anchor and hand axe in elden ring for m character. Liam the Languid, who has 9 dex and only leveld HP endurance and strength XD
