Frustrated... is this game really good or not?
I got the game from the start and can't get any further than Limgrave. Getting no further than the starting area is a waste of money. What can I do?

I don't know how many hours you've put into the game, I had 20+ in my 1st playthrough just in limgrave and weeping peninsula, just by being curious and visiting everything. It's normal to be lost in Elden Ring.
Explore, find new stuff, and if you don't know where to go, look at your map, there are indications on some graces that gives a general direction. The next step is usually stormveil castle in the north of limgrave.
If you have already done all of that and can't get past stormveil castle, that's a skill issue or a lack of patience, or maybe Elden Ring is just not for you.
If you struggle against bosses you can summon people to get help

Limgrave consists of two parts, east and west - try to explore everything and do/clear all the locations like once, including the dungeons. Should be plenty to do. After that go south and explore the Weeping Peninsula. After that try Stormhill and Stormveil Castle. If you have specific questions, ask here. What char do you play? Did you meet Melina? Do you have the spirit summoning bell?

Depends on what exactly you’re stuck on. If it’s a specific boss (Margit for example), leave him alone for now and come back to him later. Explore and follow the main roads east and level as you go. Regardless of your starting class I’d suggest getting vigor to 20+ before anything. It scales the most early and gives you a lot more survivability. Depending on your class you might also want to find a few specific npcs or items:

Strength pick up the great axe from the wandering caravan east of the bonfire by where the giant ambushes you beneath that raised gate

Dex follow the river by agheel lake and fight the invader there to get reduvia. The bleed weapon art is super handy when paired with and uchi in your offhand early on

Int go to the ruins just north of the bridge to the eastern peninsula with a bunch of poison flowers. Go underground and kill the pumpkin head to get access to sellen to get more sorceries

Faith get to round table hold (die to margit once and rest at a bonfire or rest at one after him) and talk yo the guy with the blindfold. Hell sell you a ranged pyromancer that’s will make life so much better for you rathwr than having to 100% rely on flame catch. You can later go up the east part of lurnia to the artist shack and kill the knight there to get a prayer book to give to that same npc to get lightning spells.

If you’re just struggling with the basics of combat, practice and experiment. Learn dodge timings, opportune attack windows, how many hits it takes to stager basic enemies. Meet Rani and chapel of elleh at night to get the spirit ashes and calling bell if you feel like you don’t have enough breathing room during bosses. Once you learn how to play the game on its terms it’ll click and feel a lot easier. Just takes some getting used to.

find the warp to Dragonborrow
grab the +5 stats soreseal in Fort Faroth
use the +exp gold item
kill the big sleeping dragon with a bleed flail using l2
now you have 100k rune points and you can get to lvl 40
grab bloodhound fang
use a guide to find the stones and get it to +5 asap

If he’s struggling in Limgrave, this advice is just going to soft lock him in the cave more likely than not. It’s a great shortcut for people who already have the experience with the game but not somethjng I’d recommend to someone struggling with getting down the fundamentals.

Without providing more information as for why you are not progressing, it's impossible to say anything.

Limgrave is one of the biggest areas in the game, you could easily spend like 20 hours just exploring everything...

If you just want a quick change of scenery:
- If you try walking AROUND Stormveil Castle there's a hidden path that lets you reach another continent without fighting any bosses (can be hard to spot, it's close to the old lady)
- If you go far east and uphill until the ground turns red, you can reach another continent... stay away from the church at the border if you don't want a hard miniboss fight though
- If you go south there's the Weeping Peninsula area, it's technically still part of Limgrave but here you can find a whole bunch of flask upgrades if you're thorough (plus some much easier bosses)

Margit is a really hard boss if you rush him early, you probably want to warm up with some easier side dungeons first and both get some upgrades and a little practice. Ideally you want a spirit ash to help distract him, even the humble jellyfish can save your hide by distracting the boss and giving you a chance to heal.

The Tree Sentinel is also a pretty tough boss, but if you stay on horseback and try to bait him into doing attacks and then bop him a few times while he gets up again it's much easier than trying to fight him like a regular boss (this goes for Night Cavalry and other horseback bosses too, horseback hit-and-run fighting makes them much easier to deal with)
