it depends on your build.

Samurai is pretty strong. Damage is really good and stats are pretty well allocated if you wanna go for something like bloodhound fang early. Starting weapons are also very neat.

Vagabond if you want stat optimization the class starts of fat rolling just remove the helmet or shield.

It doesn't make a huge difference. Kind of depends on what build you want to do, but even then, it's at most only a few stat point difference from what you can do with any other class. The stat point difference doesn't really matter after a few 10s of levels either.

Mostly, you pick for the starting gear, but you'll be able to find or buy it all anyways. I think most people pick samurai so that you can have two uchigatanas. You can find one in the world, and the class starts with one so it's the only way to get two on your first playthrough. Same idea with the weapons for all starting classes.

I'm pro wretch though. It's really hard for the first few hours, but you feel powerful fast, and you tend to try more different weapons as you find them, since all you have is a club.

Samurai is an excellent "learn the game" starting class, because the uchigatana is a pretty solid all-around weapon, and it comes with a bow and decent armor.

For raw control of your stats, though, you just can't beat Wretch.
If you want the best starting class bud it's duel weilding the katana, you can get another one very early in the game. Bleed is very OP in elden ring. Just make sure to get a hammer incase if you fight any rock/hard type monster since they are usually immune to bleeding and you'd get staggered by hitting them..

If you want a cake walk playthrough get Astrologer but samurai is perfect for melee

I found club to be arguable one of the best weapons in the game. Not joking here but the attack speed on that thing is crazy fast

Does it have the same R1 chain as the stone club? If so, then yeah, that thing wrecks now. It got buffed a while back. It was not nearly as good before the buff.

No. Vagabond. Also, is it me, or does the "Vagabond" title not fit the starting char at all?

I like Wretch best but Vagabond is a close second.

well it means wanderer without a home...and they were exiled from their home to wander so I'd say it fits
