Mostly, you pick for the starting gear, but you'll be able to find or buy it all anyways. I think most people pick samurai so that you can have two uchigatanas. You can find one in the world, and the class starts with one so it's the only way to get two on your first playthrough. Same idea with the weapons for all starting classes.
I'm pro wretch though. It's really hard for the first few hours, but you feel powerful fast, and you tend to try more different weapons as you find them, since all you have is a club.
For raw control of your stats, though, you just can't beat Wretch.
If you want a cake walk playthrough get Astrologer but samurai is perfect for melee
well it means wanderer without a home...and they were exiled from their home to wander so I'd say it fits
