For starting area to 20, 24 for endgame to 50, 60.
Golden Seed is to me most useful starting keepsake.
myself, i always go for a fast striking melee class and then end up using a 2 handed reach weapon. in DS1, it was the gargoyle halberd.
haven't played ds2 or 3, still deciding if i want this or ds3.
edit : and yeah, i agree with above commenter. in DS1, the thing was to put a lot into the stat that raises health and only put the minimum strength, dexterity, whatever to equip your weapon of choice.
oh and never increase resistance, ever. .dunno if this has a "resistance" stat
but level up vigor first. it's important. "damage stats" don't matter much until you bring them to at least 40 (other than for weapon/spell minimum requirements), and depends on the weapons' upgrade level too. elemental infusions will be better for a long time.
if you don't plan on using magic much, you probably want to choose the vagabond. otherwise, if you want to use sorceries you should get the astrologer, and for incantations the prophet.
but really, the differences between classes later on are really minimal and you'll only care about them if you'll get into pvp.
Mage is easy mode but not first time you play.
You need to know where to find best spells and equipment so
it is better to do mage play through after you finish game once.
For first time strength, dexterity with maybe some faith or intelligence is easiest way to play.
If you are interested in online aspect of Elden Ring buy it now while there
are a lot of players around, otherwise continue with Dark Souls II and III.
But also
If you want greater control of your stats out of the gate, roll Wretch; the club it starts with is more useful than it might first appear, and all your stats are set to 10, so you can move in any direction without feeling pre-commited or hampered by a previously-set stat.
The only real challenge with the Wretch is having to scrounge up equipment.
And yeah, definitely level Vigor.
Vigor 20 early game, 40 mid game, 60 late game.
End for what ever gear you want.
Any Stat that you want your build to have. (Str, Dex, Faith, Int, or Arc.)
Here is a Guide to get OP early but be wary of spoilers

specific advice: how do you want to play? Int caster, fai caster, str/dex, status?
But if you want to feel like a discount Steven Seagal waddling around the Lands Between with a forum/youtube made build playing someone else character....go ahead, spoil your fun!
