there is a third party mod that enables seamless co-op so you can play with up to 5 of your friends (6 people total) and venture together, without being teleported out after defeating a boss. there are no boundaries such as fog walls for areas that you would run into in co-op on official multiplayer. it also uses a separate save file so it does not affect your retail save file. "seamless co-op" is the name of the mod. in seamless co-op there is also the absence of invaders (pvp players invading your world to kill you).
HIGHLY recommend if you want to just enjoy playing with your friends and not be invaded every other 10 minutes.
there is also the seamless co-op mod, which removes most of the barriers to doing full co-op playthrus with friends, and really improves co-op in some very meaningful ways, but i would NOT recommend that for a first playthru of a souls game. it changes the balance of the game in very significant, fundamental ways and significantly alters the core gameplay loop of making it from one bonfire to the next with only the tools/items in your inventory by allowing co-op players to more or less instantly respawn into the action.
there are other ways the co-op mod alters the games difficulty and fundamentals in negative ways, like bringing a fourth player into a game balanced for 3 players max, or removing the challenge(and fun!) of getting invaded, but the main reason i recommend against first timers using it is because of the issue with respawns totally breaking one of the souls series' most fundamental gameplay loops.
do a solo playthru, summon random players along the way, then do a seamless playthru with a friend.
