If rune farming (via legitimate means) is cheating, so is having a level 99 party in any JRPG--because you absolutely didn't do that without farming XP.
Now we are talking about a dirty glitch and fixed by the looks of it (i never used it).
About the bird. No....poor thing likes to jump after you hit it for 1 damage, awfully boring farming method when you can find efficient rune farming spots like Midsommar village in Altus (crazy ladies windmill village).
Iam still in early game so it seem it would be the best spot because the only danger is falling off a cliff. I think about more like a test to skill to get there. The tower of madness or the invader before getting access to church of inhibition.
Hmm make your way to Altus and try the Windmill village. They drop decent runes, die fast, lots of them and also drop rune consumables (+5 i think) with decent drop chance. You can rinse and repeat pretty fast after dealing with the 3 groups of crazy ladies.
Thats a more or less early spot and certainly less boring than the bird (lets admit it you are not supposed to be there.....if the bird had a way to get you he would peck your face sooooo damn hard your character would be deleted forever).
The only thing that could count as cheating is abusing bugs/glitches.

it's also not the expected way to play the game, but thats an issue for them, if this is how they prefer to play, so be it.
